https://www.theguardian.com/science/...earch-suggestsA key finding was that people with extremist attitudes tended to think about the world in black and white terms, and struggled with complex tasks that required intricate mental steps, said lead author Dr Leor Zmigrod at Cambridge’s department of psychology.
“Individuals or brains that struggle to process and plan complex action sequences may be more drawn to extreme ideologies, or authoritarian ideologies that simplify the world,” she said.
She said another feature of people with tendencies towards extremism appeared to be that they were not good at regulating their emotions, meaning they were impulsive and tended to seek out emotionally evocative experiences. “And so that kind of helps us understand what kind of individual might be willing to go in and commit violence against innocent others.”
Participants who are prone to dogmatism – stuck in their ways and relatively resistant to credible evidence – actually have a problem with processing evidence even at a perceptual level, the authors found.
I think this study helps explain the minds of Trump supporters. It's easy for those on the left, or Lincoln Republicans like myself to assume they are bad people or un-American for supporting an overthrow of our elected government and destruction of the Constitution, as well as their devotion to an objectively bad man and president, but for most it's more likely that their brains literally can't process information in a way that allows them to interpret that information correctly (eg. believing the election was rigged against Trump despite all evidence and basic logic showing it wasn't). How best can we reach out to these people in your opinion?

OP, by far the most dangerous extremists on this planet are the leaders you look up to.
The people who have done that are the 'leaders' you foolishly idiotically look up to who have destroyed a once legit constitutional republic representative democracy by the use of a mass mail-in scheme and scam which is an invalid process for numerous reasons and which has created an illegitimate government.
Biden is not a duly elected president and he and this current government is not a legitimate one.
Unverified and unverifiable mass mail-in voting is not a valid election process. Among other problems, it allows communities of dishonest people and especially communities controlled by gangs, cartels, mafias, or other similar groups to have a distinct advantage over honest communities and ones that do not have those things. It allows and encourages mass ballot harvesting in the former types of communities, period. Many countries have banned it for that very reason.
The election process was not a valid one and the government formed from it is not a legitimate one.

"How best can we reach out to these people in your opinion?"
It depends how they come at you!
If they are normal and reasonable , then have a discussion and debate the issues; but if they come with that aggressive insult you first bullchit then you treat them the same.
Fire with fire, fist with fist, dikishness with more.
It doesn't have to be this way, but they mad! There is an unspoken thing, we are iron brothers and sisters, we are to support each other and...It is our duty to support our brothers and sisters in the iron game!

No doubt, they just pick a side and roll with it and go off the deep end because it's easier than thinking. You see a lot of places on this earth such as the middle east where most of the people, all that matters to them is religion. With other subjects they don't say "Of all the ways to go I feel this is best" but instead they "there is only one way for everyone and it's my way".
