You obviously didn't go to college.

I've done both things and let me assure you, college fun is the MLB level of fun. Going to a bar downtown is a high school baseball game in comparison.

One of the biggest scams in human history, besides organized religion, is the American college scam. The majority of that population has been brainwashed into believing that getting a BA is the be all, end all. Most BAs are utterly worthless, especially nowadays more than ever where most colleges are liberal activist indoctrination centres.

Unless you have a clear path in mind, want to specialize, or plan on getting a graduate degree to transition into a career that necessitates it, most BAs are completely useless.

Imagine paying 200k for a useless degree. Wake up, seriously.

    No debt crew.

I'm not sure if kids nowadays are so lame that the college experience wouldn't be as fun as it used to be.

I also understand that some people aren't going to enjoy it due to being socially inept... Different strokes for different folks.

If I had a kid, id advise them to try college. Even if it meant some $60k of debt, which is honesty nothing when you become an adult.

Of course. This is just another edgy LARP from edgy rocket man. Tesla got 500k applicants for 2500 open positions last year and I'd wager there wasn't a single one hired without a college degree.

Yeah like everyone said you need a degree for most good jobs. If you start a business it doesn’t matter but if you want to work for a company then it does matter.

Plus college is really important as a life phase and life experience. An intermediary phase ending your childhood but before adulting. It can be fun and it’s just a nice experience to go to class and hear about new ideas etc. Before the pressures of working life.

Also it’s a good environment to form friendships and romantic relationships. You’re not going to find those same social opportunities in working life.

Overall 10/10 would recommend. Only exception is if you’re very entrepreneurial and have a clear plan for your own business. Otherwise college is worth it and a good life experience.

I know that's a blanket statement and doesn't necessarily apply to everyone, but I can say for me it holds true. I never went, and am currently enjoying a career as a web developer,, now working from home earning just as much as my colleagues with degrees.

He's totally right. College by itself is useless, in fact worse than that it drains time and money. College being seen as an achievement on its own is why we have so many "educated" people who don't know how tax brackets work, how to do basic problem solving or how the basics of investment and interest.

The skills you can potentially build and connections you can make are the valuable part. But you could do that on your own, and many successful people do.

In short, like everything else in life, without a work ethic and applying yourself nothing is useful.

I fully agree. I'm not using my degree, but I also am so glad I went and had the classic college experience.

Honestly, hitting the real world at 18 would've sucked.

But he doesn't employ them because of the degree he employs them because they have the skill he wants.

College is absolutely useless. We should be promoting vocational tracks that are faster and cost way less with no bs

    Agreeing with Elon.

Unless you are going into a STEM field that require a lot of lisences and requirements in your profession, college is useless.

I know so many english, finance, spanish, etc. who are working as data entry phaggits making 15$ per hour, or working at retail stores.

In the 1960’s about 10-15 percent of the workforce had college degrees. Today, that number hovers at around 40 percent, and in the United States we have had a decade of virtually no economic growth. That entry-level job that allowed the English major to enter the white-collar workforce in 1970 doesn’t exist anymore.

A college degree is worthless if nobody is willing to pay you for the skills you acquired while earning it. STEM graduates, as well as those from Accounting programs, learned actual skills in their studies. Humanities majors learned only “soft skills” like writing, and “critical thinking.” All useless majors teach the same “soft skills.” Many of the useful majors also teach them, so why not choose a useful major?

Almost all kids who are chasing their dumb dreams in college would be better served by majoring in Accounting or IT while working part-time in whatever field they’re planning on pursuing. They’ll have both useful skills and work experience.

I just google searched the question "why are liberal art degrees so useless?" and the first link to me to quora where a COLLEGE PROFESSOR even agreed that liberal art degrees are useless and you should only go for the experience.

    https://www.quora.com/Are-liberal-ar...r-them-useless

I have taught in the liberal arts for twenty five years and have thought about this question often, and the best answer I can give is yes, a degree in the humanities is totally useless. It serves no function whatsoever.

Every day of my working life I look out at lecture halls ad see dozens of students who have been dragooned into university by their parents or who have dragged themselves into the desks because they simply want a job. I feel their pain. I have told students that if they really just want to make money as quickly as possible they should get a skill that is in high demand and start out as a paid apprentice. Forget the lectures in semiotics and power structures in media.

I have one student left college and became a plumber and now has ten employees and three trucks. He is content with his job and seems to be doing very well financially. Not rich, I suppose, but probably better paid than the average twenty-something year old college grad at an insurance company working as a trainee. I always call him when I have a plumbing issue and he’s great. And if he keeps growing he will certainly be making more money. Possibly big money.

The point is, you really do not need to go to college if you want to make cash. Lots of the dotcoms no longer require a degree-just the ability to crunch code and do online design. The world has a hunger for computer technicians, air conditioning repairmen, insurance salesmen, mechanics, painters, chefs and bricklayers. You can become a cop at 21 and put in twenty years of service to the badge, retire at 41 and collect retirement benefits after 55. One of my college friends became a fireman and he retired before age 50 and lives a happy life in Vegas. I myself sold cutlery in college and could have been a branch manager at age 22, by now I probably would be a regional manager or higher. I’m fifty now, chances are I could look at retirement. None of this requires a degree.

You can get plenty of skills online, by the way. Including great classes from great liberal arts profs. A whole lot of it is free. I like to watch videos on Shakespeare and Postmodern literary theory.

So why get a liberal arts degree?

You really should only do it if you are able to enjoy the university experience. That means enjoying the social scene, the sports offerings, the club offerings and of course the academics. You need to have access to a decent place to sleep and regular food and hopefully you won’t be in crushing debt afterwards.
You also need time. Time to study, time to eat, and time to just…be. To dawdle. To hang out in the library reading Kant because well, why not? To thumb through old copies of the Paris Review of read all the novels by Ernest Hemingway with your feet up looking over some verdant field. Smoke some weed with the hippy chick down the hall in your dorm or go hiking with a copy of Rilke in your backpack. Marinate in the experience.

Most of all, you really should only do a degree if you are going to DO it. Get excited about what you are reading, make bold pronouncements. I can recall staying late in the library with a friend writing my American Colonial History papers and really feeling like I was getting in touch with the Founding Fathers. When I was lucky enough to go to Oxford I would attend Shakespeare plays with my gorgeous girlfriend and feel I was the luckiest guy alive. Because I was really INTO it. I was living it, I was interested and switched on and enjoying the process. I had no idea what I was going to do with my degree. I just liked doing it for the sake of doing it. I wrote some crazy papers. I stayed up late reading Herodotus and thought about him when I backpacked into Greece on my way to South Africa. I went beyond what my profs wanted me to do. I read far more than what was assigned. I read Moby Dick in Martha’s Vineyard, close by where the novel begins. I read all of Hemingway while camping in Canada. I read good parts of Thoreau up there as well.

I was lucky. My father could afford to subsidize this life. I also sold knives and bar tended so I could afford to go skiing out West and go to Paris to visit Hemingway’s old haunts. I left school with zero debt and a new car. By then I was pretty sure I would be a novelist and a lecturer, and I am both. BUT I probably would have made more cash selling knives (I was really good at this, I even have a trophy somewhere for selling more knives than anyone else in my little region). Selling knives is a real job. People need knives. You can’t cook without ‘em. But I am not sure I would want that to be the only thing I ever did. I probably could have parlayed that sales job into selling financial products, and I might have made a mint. But I choose this path, and it certainly has been fun.

So, only do this useless degree if it speaks to you. If you really HAVE to do it. If you want to know more about some subject because it really is interesting and diverting and you think you can use what you are earning to make a richer life for yourself. Otherwise, really, save yourself the time and the money and get trained up for a job that can pay the rent and the phone bill. That’s worthwhile. Butcher, baker, candlestick maker, etc.

But maybe a life of just paying the rent and the phone bill can start to feel a little hollow after a while.
