Everything else is useless if you have luck and charisma at your back. Some are not as fortunate and do need the degree to compensate for lack of both. I have went to a very good university and I have learnt in one week on the job more than what I have learnt the 4 years I was studying. But I did need the degree to get in even though it was, to me, not that insightful or something I could not learn on my own. He is not right but he is not wrong either.

EDIT: To prevent further notices, "Learnt" IS a correct word in English

I went to 2 years of college and decided that it wasn't for me and went into the trades.

From my experience, Elon is correct 90 percent of the time ( unless someone is trying to become a doctor, engineer etc). Many 'skills' such as management, business, can be learned in the field too...

However, many jobs recquire you to have a degree just to hire you so i see that as the reason why people go to college mostly. Not to learn, but to get the sheet of paper that gives you a good paying job. It's totally logical to do this is today's job climate.

Musk dropped out of a Physics PhD at Stanford. 99% of you *******s on here wouldn't even be accepted to a top 10 PhD program. Musk has a different work ethic and brain than the vast majority of people (my research lab worked with Neuralink, dude has a very strange personality).

This right here. Musk also had the right ideas at a booming time. Depends on the job though, I think getting a BSc is necessary to gain a rigorous education in CS. Self-study won't teach the theory.

That's the view of my father and many of his friends have. Dad and his friends have been what many would consider successful in life. They have college degrees, but from smaller colleges that didn't cost a great deal. Much of what they have done in life successfully was in areas that they learned on their own.

I guess neither the job experience nor the 4 years of college were able to teach you that "learnt" is not a word. It's "learned", not "learnt", bud.

Humanities degrees are mostly worthless. STEM is worthwhile tho. But in the end its all about how good you are at what you do. If you're a programmer, its better to have a lot of submissions to open source projects than classroom time. Its just hard to get good at programming without formal training. Lots of people have done it (some world class programmers) but it takes a certain type of person who is very driven to learn it on their own.

College is useless unless you need a job then you can get a slightly better job than you otherwise would of if you did not have a degree, but still a job. If you can innovate and create your own thing then absolutely college is a huge waste of time.

What college and subsequent 9-5 jobs do is stifle your productivity as a human, make you accept mediocre and be ok with that as most miscers (and the public) are and thats fine if thats what you want out of life.

Sorry, I guess I jumped the gun on that one. I was wrong, and probably should have done a quick search before I said anything about it. So my mistake on that one, and you are correct, I was being stupid by calling you out for it.

For what it's worth, I didn't mean it as a legit dig at your intelligence. I meant it more just for the sake of being a miscer bastard and ribbing you than anything else, though I could have been more clear about that. I agreed with the general premise of what you said about job experience usually being more important than college learning experience.

In my experience, for most job professions/careers, college/higher education is useful in teaching people how to take take different approaches/think different ways than it is literally teaching them how to do the actual work itself. Especially with 4 year degrees.

I consider myself to be highly educated, even without a formal education. I also used to think that college is a waste of time.

There is without a doubt that you can learn things without going to school. For the general population however this will be a much more disorganized and difficult task.

College is important and one should decide the best way to utilize it.

Many college students have a hard time learning. If they can't take in what they're studying, money is being thrown out the window, which is sadly the case for many people.

Most modern day degrees are useless and only gloried highschool subjects but others such as STEM are always a fantastic route to go.

And no, if you have a sh*t degree you're not in the same league as someone with an actual difficult degree that requires schooling and not something you could learn by reading wiki 10min a day.

I don't believe there is a degree in transgender. At best you can get a "certificate" for taking a few electorials on gender studies.

I mean, they're often a check in the box necessary for starting or advancing in a career so...not useless in that regard if you major in something worthwhile. Although, in many cases you could just learn what you need to know on the job without needing the degree.

Not even remotely close to being the same thing.

Going to a bar or club is just some part-time party chit.

Attending college is an entire full-time lifestyle schedule of fun.

You just lift, make friends, drink, are surrounded by endless attractive sloots, literally 24/7....
