Any miskcels have any experience with owning an R8?
I dont know why but im actually contemplating selling my vette (2017 Grand Sport M7 2LT+PDR/NAV w/ Borla ATAK/Corsa X pipe), adding some cash and getting a used R8.
It hasn't changed much since 2008 except I believe in 2017 the tach went full digital which I like. New they are ~$145ish but im seeing some used 2008-2013's for 60-70K. I absolutely think this car is stunning but I cant see myself dropping that much money for such a used vehicle. Im really hoping for a manual transmission but I know they stopped that in 2015- plus hearing issues with having to replace the R8 gearbox.
My BATNA is to just keep loving the vette and have no issues with that.

Yeah sell the vett they’re boring af, no traction; no thrill to drive in other then people outside say “cool” while you sit inside basically driving on the floor with 2 doors, Barely see over hood, and scary as fuk when it rains or turns
I sold my hellcat for the S209 sti. Best car ever. 6 speed, AWD, 4 doors, and super car handling.
Taking turns going 80+ now I couldn’t do 40 in the hellcat
And only 200 people in the car own my car lol. People come running out to take pics of it
Dodges/vettes/mustangs are more basic then a Honda Civic these days and not much to it then straight. Super fast though, won’t deny that.
Turns are 1000x more skilled to go fast + I can take my car around the USEating "clean" doesn't mean eating "healthy"

I think that r8 is going to feel like a super car straight car that can handle a little better. I test drove that and almost got for my wife, I got her the m4 instead.
Should go something better then that. The 2008 I drove was super nice, but you’ll feel the ageEating "clean" doesn't mean eating "healthy"

This.
I know a lot of guys that have owned R8s and while they love them, they never seem to keep them. I think they are just a bit too civilized to keep people captivated long term.
The only people I know that keep these long term have other more exciting cars. The R8 is reliable, quick enough and stylish but subtle.
I see people crapping on the C7 above and while I have never owned one, I know a dozen or more guys that sold theirs and ended up buying another later on. Take that to mean whatever you want.Eat in a deficit to lose weight.

I kept my R8 for 3.5 years and only got rid of it because the warranty was about to expire. In hindsight, I wish I kept it. I also had it while I was in Germany and could drive it how it was meant to be driven on the autobahn and backroads. When I moved back to the states, it wasn't as much fun because of law enforcement.

We're probably on polar opposites of the sports car industry as I would never get a challenger or STI. I get the vibe that you dont know much about corvettes (no offense obv) but if you think they are in the same class as mustangs or think they arent good but only in a straight line it seems your corvette knowledge is lacking because its exactly the opposite.
That's the vibe I am getting. Ive always been a viper fan and the C6 ZR1 will always be iconic- however that C6 interior got a huge upgrade with the C7 and even moreso with the C8. Im just not a C8 fan yet until I see the Z06- if they are going to drop the manual trans I want to see a flat plane crank.
Hows the maintenance/known issues with the R8/manual gearbox?
Yep. My only worry is that I will never be able to work on it. No idea. I also agree most people recommend the V10- hell, they dont even offer a V8 anymore I believe.USMC 0311

The main issue with the R8 V8 is that it is the crappy V8, not the new 4.0TT which is f-ing awesome.
The older 4.2 V8 had a lot of potential problems and was down on power.
The 4.0TT makes more torque than the V10 and this might be why they never made an R8 with the new V8. A simple tune brings that 4.0TT to 700lb-ft, imagine that in an R8?Eat in a deficit to lose weight.

Manual is the way to go.
Corvettes are awesome. You really can't go wrong with them. They look and perform incredibly well dollar/hp, but they just dont carry the same mystique as a high end exotic car.
With the way the market is with low production gated cars you could get into a R8 and if you decide you dont like it you could get out of it and may even make money on it. The demand is there. The 6-speed Gallardo market is similar. Lots of guys holding now and the cars that are coming to market are trying to demand a premium.

Completely agree. The C7 looks fantastic and for the $ the performance is outstanding. They may have sold 1 billion of them but that means that there are parts and mods for days.
A lot of people might be surprised to see how many people with multimillion $ collections also have a C7 and how often they drive it.Eat in a deficit to lose weight.

I never understood the mentality of thinking the V8 isn't fast enough, like where do you guys drive? Exclusively at race tracks? The V8 is more than fast enough for the street, and I actually think it's at a far better power range as far as road going cars go as you can actually enjoy opening it up. Driving something more powerful it's like you can hardly open it up on public roads.

The 420hp V8 will lose to a base model 370hp 911. We rented both and ran them.
The R8 drives and handles very well... I will say that the V8 sounds glorious still and it's a great car. Just don't expect to be pulling on everything. You will lose almost every car through twisties.
Buying an R8 of that age requires good wrenching skills and being able to source parts on your own

Its a V8, its which V8. The 4.2 is the V8 that came in the R8 for a time and it is objectively worse in every way compared to both Audi's V10 and the new 4.0TT V8.
Launch control and WOT happens a lot more often that you might expect, its just out of sight. I probably did 100+ arrestable pulls last year but I didn't do them in front of witnesses.Eat in a deficit to lose weight.

Objectively? I beg to differ, that is if you only evaluate cars based upon their benchmarks and track performance. There is a whole fun factor associated with cars that can't be measured with benchmarks and that V8 is fantastic from an enjoyment standpoint. Personally I think it sounds better than the V10, and the NA engine definitely sounds better than the turbo. That and it's a very high-revving engine which is a lot of fun, especially with a stick shift. At it's power range you can actually enjoy opening it up on the streets, and it's actually too powerful if anything for a lot of windy backroads.

I literally owned both, this is not subjective. The 4.2 is quick and sounds OK but the 4.0TT is an absolute monster with incredible mod potential and can put down that insane power reliably. I have nearly 70,000 on my RS7 and its never been in the shop, and I drive the piss out of it.
That 4.0TT has the classic cross plane crank V8 grumble, the turbos are absolutely inaudible. This is literally my car, kid recorded this a few years ago.
BTW, if you want to back road bombing, you get a small car, like my Evora 400. There is 0 chance I would go bombing around the back roads in my Audi BUT I will line up a traffic light and embarrass most cars.Eat in a deficit to lose weight.
