Used to have a friend when I was younger (early 90's) with an epic board game called Hero Quest.
They can be found still, in varying condition, on Ebay etc. but bloody expensive.
Is there anything off the shelf, currently, that is comparable but easy to obtain/cheaper?

Misc RPG/Fantasy Brahs. Recommend Me A Table Top Game Like... Reps for Good Answers.
"The greatest feeling you can get in a gym, or the most satisfying feeling you can get in the gym is... The Pump. Let's say you train your biceps. Blood is rushing into your muscles and that's what we call The Pump. You muscles get a really tight feeling, like your skin is going to explode any minute, and it's really tight - it's like somebody blowing air into it, into your muscle. It just blows up, and it feels really different. It feels fantastic.
It's as satisfying to me as, uh..."

My favorite tabletop is Mordheim, by GW, where you play as a warband looting a city that got hit by a meteorite
However there’s a similar but much more recent and still supported game that simplifies a lot of rules called Frostgrave
You play as a wizard looting an ancient city of magic that was destroyed
You have an apprentice, and then a bunch of goons or specialist soldiers. You only need to track experience and growth for wizard and apprentice, but it’s a great campaign game where you can have tons of battles with other warbands
The models for it all a lot cheaper than GW games, they have fantastic plastic box sets of you enjoy the modeling aspect a lot too
You only need like ten guys per warband, so it’s not a large financial commitment
10/10 recommend, they have a sci fi version coming out in spring also called Stargrave* Rawdog crew * Creampie crew * Poverty crew *
Haven't worn a condom since middle school crew
* HTC crew *
* Teacher crew *

Not really. You can use a map on the table if you like. Also you can put little figures on that map to represent your characters. This is just up to the group.
You need books and dice to play the game. It does help to have the figures. You can paint your figures and have all kinds of cool stuff to augment the game.
WoW is based on D&D but has become much different.
D&D mostly tends to be more fun and interesting.R.I.P. Hector Bluntz
