ATF does absolutely go door to door attempting to take firearms. They won't really have warrants to enter your house but they will knock and ask you to come out. If this ever happens to anyone ITT I'd suggest just not answering the door. If you accidentally do answer, or they catch you outside, tell them they can't come in and tell them you sold X unserialized part but will be happy to show them Y (legal) part.

Police aren't going door to door looking for firearms, too busy handling all the Karen calls.

I actually can't believe anyone registers an SBR. You're on a far more detailed list, with finger prints and a 2x2 ID. You have to get it engraved, and you can't sell it to anyone. They know exactly what you've got.

If you ever want to sell your SBR you have to convince the person buying it to get their prints done, submit a background check and pay $200 for a tax stamp.


So downside of not registering your SBR is...nothing? I can't think of cases where someone was jailed for having an unregistered SBR. If it's ever brought up the charges get dropped. If you ever use your SBR in defense just disassemble it. Active non-compliance is the way.

The above row shows a casing and a partially fragmented bullet recovered from the scene of the shooting under a comparison microscope, and the bottom row shows a casing and bullet from the same upper receiver, fired in a control environment, also under the same comparison microscope.

As you can see here, here and here, the identical microscopic markings suggest that both rounds were fired from the same receiver. Furthermore, we can see similar markings here and here in the lands and grooves, suggesting that this barrel is from the same manufacturer.

Now is this incriminating evidence alone? No. However, it becomes clear that the defendant used this upper receiver when we consider: prosecution's exhibit B.

As you can see here, gun shot residue was found spattered along this wall, believed to be from gas blow back out of the ejection port and matching the defendant's location in the shooting according to their own testimony. To the right of that, we can see another spray of gun shot residue, from the barrel of the gun, indicated by the pattern. What was the distance measured between these two points? About 12 inches, certainly below 16.

Considering these facts, do you think that the defendant used this upper receiver in the shooting, effectively creating an unregistered short barreled rifle? We believe so. Why would they disassemble their illegal assault weapon to hide it? Do you think they take our laws seriously? Do you think they believe in public safety? NO. That is why this case matters, that is why we are asking for the maximum sentence. To send a message to criminals and extremists that laws protecting the public against weapons of war should be taken seriously.

The "use it in defense" situation is the hole to the plan for anything not fully legal. If you think you can just disassemble the weapon and slap a different config together before the cops show up, I don't think you understand how good forensics are in 2021.

What we are discussing (or at least what I was talking about) is what are you gonna do with your AR pistols when Biden makes you a felon overnight and declares braces on short barrels an NFA item. This is not far fetched and seems likely.

Serious question. To convert and sell a registered SBR, you need to unregister it or something, right? Like if you just slap a a 16" upper to sell it, doesn't the ATF still just figure you sold an SBR when you transfer it

Not even sure, but again, the only serialized or registered part is a like $100 (or less) stripped lower (generally, anyway, not some super fancy billet thing). Install 16" barrel, move everything to a different stripped lower, now it's not even an SBR in any way at all any more.

Or just take the upper off and sell it, it's not even a firearm, and then, well you can figure it out, that one single part is the only one that currently really matters

Yea... considering it’s illegal as hell, the downsides are many and terrible. 10 years in prison and no more right to own a firearm, and that’s just for the illegal weapon. I’m sure that’s gonna play real well with the jury after the prosecution shreds the defendants character. Also, if you have a pre-paid legal or carry insurance they’re not going to cover anything because you used an illegal weapon.

Yea, I’m not saying the laws regarding the definitions of SBRs/pistols and the accessories that change those definitions are correct or logical in any way. Just saying someone thinking there’s no penalty for having an illegal weapon is incredibly stupid.
