Taiwan reports large incursion by PLAAF

AIPEI (Reuters) - Eight Chinese bomber planes and four fighter jets entered the southwestern corner of Taiwan’s air defence identification zone on Saturday, and Taiwan’s air force deployed missiles to “monitor” the incursion, the island’s Defence Ministry said.

China, which claims Taiwan as its own territory, has conducted almost daily flights over the waters between the southern part of Taiwan and the Taiwan-controlled Pratas Islands in the South China Sea in recent months.

However they have generally consisted of just one or two reconnaissance aircraft.

The presence of so many Chinese combat aircraft on this mission - Taiwan said it was made up of eight nuclear-capable H-6K bombers and four J-16 fighter jets - is unusual.

U.S. carrier group enters South China Sea amid Taiwan tensions
TAIPEI (Reuters) - A U.S. aircraft carrier group led by the USS Theodore Roosevelt has entered the South China Sea to promote “freedom of the seas”, the U.S. military said on Sunday, at a time when tensions between China and Taiwan have raised concern in Washington.

U.S. Indo-Pacific Command said in a statement the strike group entered the South China Sea on Saturday, the same day Taiwan reported a large incursion of Chinese bombers and fighter jets into its air defence identification zone in the vicinity of the Pratas Islands.

The U.S. military said the carrier strike group was in the South China Sea, a large part of which is claimed by China, to conduct routine operations “to ensure freedom of the seas, build partnerships that foster maritime security”.

“After sailing through these waters throughout my 30-year career, it’s great to be in the South China Sea again, conducting routine operations, promoting freedom of the seas, and reassuring allies and partners,” Rear Adm. Doug Verissimo, commander of the strike group, was quoted as saying.

“With two-thirds of the world’s trade travelling through this very important region, it is vital that we maintain our presence and continue to promote the rules-based order which has allowed us all to prosper,” Verissimo said in the statement.

The announcement comes just days after Joe Biden was sworn in as U.S. president.

Biden’s nominee for secretary of state, Antony Blinken, told his Senate confirmation hearing on Tuesday there was “no doubt” China posed the most significant challenge to the United States of any nation.

China has repeatedly complained about U.S. Navy ships getting close to Chinese-occupied islands in the South China Sea, where Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, Brunei and Taiwan all have competing claims.

The Theodore Roosevelt is being accompanied by the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill, and the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers USS Russell and USS John Finn, the U.S. statement said.

China to conduct military drills in S. China Sea amid tensions with U.S.
BEIJING, Jan 26 (Reuters) - China said on Tuesday it will conduct military exercises in the South China Sea this week, just days after Beijing bristled at a U.S. aircraft carrier group's entry into the disputed waters.

A notice issued by the country's Maritime Safety Administration prohibited entry into a portion of waters in the Gulf of Tonkin to the west of the Leizhou peninsula in southwestern China from Jan. 27 to Jan. 30, but it did not offer details on when the drills would take place or at what scale.

A U.S. carrier group led by the USS Theodore Roosevelt entered the South China Sea on Saturday to promote "freedom of the seas," the U.S. military said, days after Joe Biden began his term as president.

The contested waters have become another flashpoint in the increasingly testy bilateral relationship between Beijing and Washington. The U.S. military has steadily increased its activities there in recent years as China asserts its territorial claims in the area in conflict with neighbouring countries including Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, Brunei and Taiwan.

The announcement of the drills in the Gulf of Tonkin, just east of Vietnam, came as the Southeast Asian country opened a key Communist Party congress in Hanoi.

China on Monday complained that the United States frequently sends aircraft and vessels into the South China Sea, through which trillion dollars in trade flow every year, to "flex its muscles" and said such actions are not conducive to peace and stability in the region. China sharpens language, warns Taiwan that independence 'means war'
BEIJING (Reuters) - China toughened its language towards Taiwan on Thursday, warning after recent stepped up military activities near the island that “independence means war” and that its armed forces were acting in response to provocation and foreign interference.

Taiwan, claimed by China as its own territory, reported multiple Chinese fighter jets and bombers entering its southwestern air defence identification zone last weekend, prompting Washington to urge Beijing to stop pressuring Taiwan.

China believes that Taiwan’s democratically-elected government is moving the island towards a declaration of formal independence, though Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen has repeatedly said it is already an independent country called the Republic of China, its formal name.

Asked at a monthly news briefing about the air force’s recent activities, Chinese Defence Ministry spokesman Wu Qian said Taiwan is an inseparable part of China.

“The military activities carried out by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army in the Taiwan Strait are necessary actions to address the current security situation in the Taiwan Strait and to safeguard national sovereignty and security,” he said.

“They are a solemn response to external interference and provocations by ‘Taiwan independence’ forces,” he added.

Wu said a “handful” of people in Taiwan were seeking the island’s independence.

“We warn those ‘Taiwan independence’ elements: those who play with fire will burn themselves, and ‘Taiwan independence’ means war,” he added.

While China has never renounced the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control, it is unusual for Beijing to make such overt, verbal threats of conflict.

Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council said China should think carefully and not underestimate the island’s determination to defend its sovereignty and uphold freedom and democracy.

Taiwan’s Defence Ministry reported six Chinese air force aircraft, including four J-10 fighter jets, flew into its air defence zone on Thursday, close to the Taiwan-controlled Pratas Islands at the top end of the South China Sea.

The weekend Chinese incursions coincided with a U.S. carrier battle group entering the disputed South China Sea to promote “freedom of the seas”.

China routinely describes Taiwan as its most important and sensitive issue in relations with the United States, which under the former Trump administration ramped up support for the island in terms of arms sales and senior officials visiting Taipei.

President Joe Biden’s government, in office for a week, has reaffirmed its commitment to Taiwan as being “rock solid”, potentially auguring further strains with Beijing.

Taiwan has denounced China’s threats and efforts at intimidation, and Tsai has vowed to defend the island’s freedom and not be coerced.

Chinese H-6 Bombers Heard On Radio Confirming Orders For Simulated Attack On U.S. Aircraft Carrier Near Taiwan

Unsurprisingly, the package of 13 Chinese combat aircraft, (including eight H-6 bombers) entering Taiwan’s ADIZ last Saturday were carrying out a mock attack on USS Theodore Roosevelt.

As already reported in detail, a total of 28 aircraft, including as many as eight PLAAF (People’s Liberation Army Air Force) H-6 bombers, “intruded” into Taiwan’s ADIZ (Air Defense Identification Zone) between Jan. 23 and 24, 2021.

In particular, we noticed that the mission on Saturday Jan. 23, was conducted as the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group (TRCSG), led by USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier entered the South China Sea (SCS) “to conduct routine operations”.

At this respect, here’s the comment this Author made in a previous story on the spike in PLA activity near Taiwan as the U.S. flattop entered the same area of operations: “The simultaneous presence of the Chinese Xian H-6K in the region as the TRSG entered the SCS is particularly interesting, if we consider the role of the PLAAF bomber. The H-6K is a highly modified variant from the original H-6 bomber (itself a Tu-16 derivative), designed for long-range/stand-off maritime or land strike capability with long-range anti-ship and land-attack cruise missiles. In short, it is capable of attacking U.S. carrier battle groups or other priority targets with up to six YJ-12 ASCM (Anti-Ship Cruise Missiles) and 6/7 KD-20 ALCMs.”

Dealing with the YJ-12, it has a range of 400 km, can reach speeds of up to Mach 3, and is capable of performing airborne evasive maneuvers approaching the target: these features make this ASCM (Anti-Ship Cruise Missile) difficult for Aegis Combat Systems and SM-2 surface-to-air missiles that protect U.S. carrier strike groups.

A confirmation that the mission flown on Jan. 23 was simulating an air strike on the U.S. aircraft carrier comes from the Financial Times, that on Jan. 29, 2020 reported: “People familiar with intelligence collected by the US and its allies said the bombers and some of the fighter aircraft involved were conducting an exercise that used a group of US Navy vessels led by the carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt in the same area as a simulated target. Pilots of H-6 bombers could be heard in cockpit conversations confirming orders for the simulated targeting and release of anti-ship missiles against the carrier, the people said.”

Keep in mind, nothing out of the ordinary with FONOPS. They increased dramatically under the Trump administration, waiting to see if Biden's admin will continue the trend.

Destroyer USS John McCain Transits Taiwan Strait While Chinese Warships Watched

Guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain (DDG-56) transited the Taiwan Strait on Thursday with Chinese warships following the transit, USNI News has learned.

“The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain conducted a routine Taiwan Strait transit Feb. 4 in accordance with international law,” reads a U.S. 7th Fleet statement.
“The ship’s transit through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the U.S. commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific. The United States military will continue to fly, sail and operate anywhere international law allows.”

According to military ship spotters, McCain was operating near two People’s Liberation Army Navy guided-missile frigates during the transit. USNI News understands U.S. warships operating in the South China Sea pick up at least one Chinese warship to monitor their movements.

The transit of McCain is the first during the Biden administration, which has continued to maintain rhetorical pressure on China. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin affirmed during his confirmation hearing last month that China was the largest military challenge the U.S. faces over the next several years, reflecting the Trump administration’s hard line on Beijing.

Aircraft carriers USS Nimitz and USS Theodore Roosevelt train together in South China Sea

The aircraft carriers USS Nimitz and USS Theodore Roosevelt and their strike groups met in the contentious South China Sea for joint operations on Tuesday, according to a Navy statement.

“The ships and aircraft of the two strike groups coordinated operations in a highly trafficked area to demonstrate the U.S. Navy's ability to operate in challenging environments,” the statement said.

Two-carrier exercises are relatively rare, though they have seen a recent uptick in frequency. As of Tuesday, just nine have taken place in the Indo-Pacific region since 2001 — four since June.

The Navy last conducted dual carrier operations in the South China Sea in July, when the Nimitz and USS Ronald Reagan operated together twice.

Anyone remember the collision between a Chinese fighter jet and US recon plane way back in 2001? The Chinese pilot was presumed dead (lost at sea) and the US airmen were held by Chinese authorities until the US offered a letter of "regret" or "sorrow" about the incident (which the Chinese said was an apology letter although the US said it was not).

A French Navy SSN Patrolled The South China Sea

French minister calls it "a striking proof of the capacity of our French Navy to deploy far and for a long time in connection with our Australian, American and Japanese strategic partners".

On Monday night, Florence Parly shed some light on the current deployment of Rubis-class SSN Emeraude to the Pacific region. In a series of messages on Twitter, the minister said:

“Mission Marianne: since September, a nuclear attack submarine (SSN Émeraude) and a support vessel (BSAM Seine) have sailed up to 15,000 km from the coasts of mainland France in the Indian Ocean and the Pacific. This extraordinary patrol has just completed a passage in the South China Sea. A striking proof of the capacity of our French Navy to deploy far and for a long time in connection with our Australian, American and Japanese strategic partners. Why such a mission? To enrich our knowledge of this area and to affirm that international law is the only rule that is valid, whatever the sea in which we sail. Nation of the Indo-Pacific (~ 2 million inhabitants), France has the 2nd largest exclusive economic zone in the world (11 million km2 of which 9 are in the Indo-Pacific). We intend to protect our sovereignty and our interests.”

Yes, the pilots were ridiculed for not ditching the plane at sea given the sensitive nature of what was on board. China stripped it clean and gained access to crypto/intelligence docs relative to what they were surveilling and how.

Breaking: President Biden announces new Pentagon China task force
    https://www.defensenews.com/pentagon...na-task-force/

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden on Wednesday announced at the Pentagon a new review of how the U.S. military is postured to deter China in the Pacific.

Biden, who was joined for his first department visit since taking office by Vice President Kamala Harris, said the review will help “chart a strong path forward on China related matters.”

“It will require a whole of government efforts, bipartisan cooperation in Congress and strong alliances and partners,” Biden said. “That is how we will meet the China challenge and ensure the American people win the competition of the future.”

...Per a department factsheet, the authors will take a deep-dive into the department’s strategy; operational concepts; technology and force structure; force posture and force management; intelligence; alliances and partnerships; and military relations with China."

South China Sea: US challenges China’s claims with Spratly mission
US Navy destroyer sails near disputed islands in freedom of navigation operation
Passage is the latest in a series of activities by the American military in the region

A US destroyer sailed by the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea on Wednesday in the latest challenge to Beijing’s claims over the disputed waters.

The US Navy’s Seventh Fleet said the USS Russell “asserted navigational rights and freedoms in the Spratly Islands, consistent with international law”.

“This freedom of navigation operation upheld the rights, freedoms and lawful uses of the sea recognised in international law by challenging unlawful restrictions on innocent passage imposed by China, Vietnam and Taiwan,” it said.

“Unlawful and sweeping maritime claims in the South China Sea pose a serious threat to the freedom of the sea, including freedom of navigation and overflight, free trade and unimpeded commerce, and freedom of economic opportunity for South China Sea littoral nations.”

China claims sovereignty over the entire archipelago, but Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam also have lodged competing claims for some or all of the islands.

Beijing’s extensive territorial claims in the resource-rich waters have become a hot-button issue in its testy relationship with the United States. The two countries are at odds over trade, the origins of the coronavirus pandemic, Hong Kong, Taiwan and accusations of human rights abuses against Uygur Muslims in Xinjiang.

Washington has denounced what it called Beijing’s attempts to bully neighbours with competing interests. China has repeatedly attacked what it calls US efforts to foment unrest in the region and interfere in what it regards as its internal affairs.

Cotton: Give China ‘crystal clear’ warning not to invade Taiwan
WASHINGTON ― It’s time for the United States to be “crystal clear” it will not allow China to invade Taiwan and will end its longstanding “strategic ambiguity” about whether it would come to Taiwan’s defense if the island is invaded, said Sen. Tom Cotton, a senior Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Speaking at a Reagan Institute event to unveil his economic strategy against China, Cotton said Thursday that the U.S. should adopt a tougher policy to respond to what he called China’s sharpening rhetoric and actions toward Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory. Last month, the U.S. reaffirmed its support for Taiwan after China dispatched a dozen warplanes near the island.

“The United States needs to be clear that we will not allow China to invade Taiwan and subjugate it. Case closed. No further debate,” said Cotton, the top Republican on the AirLand Subcommittee and former chairman of the Economic Policy Subcommittee.

“I think [the] time has come to be clear: Replace strategic ambiguity with strategic clarity that the United States will come to the aid of Taiwan if China was to forcefully invade Taiwan or otherwise change the status quo across the [Taiwan] Strait,” he added.

The U.S. should establish further “clear red lines that will require a response by the United States,” such as if China seizes any of the islands claimed by Taiwan, invades regional allies like India, or permits an attack on American troops or allies by North Korea.

Cotton’s remarks came as he unveiled a report titled “Beat China,” which included calls for military and diplomatic strength but focused almost entirely on a “targeted decoupling” of the U.S. and Chinese economies ― with several steps to mitigate any economic losses as a result.

That report came a day after the U.S. Chamber of Commerce released its own report saying American companies would lose hundreds of billions of dollars if they slashed investment in China.

“Now is the time for action,” Cotton said. “Any serious strategy to beat China must start with a commitment to decouple our countries and key areas in order to exploit the leverage we still have over China and minimize this leverage over us as we pull apart,” Cotton said.

The viewpoints highlight the challenges President Joe Biden faces as he forms his policies toward China, which Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has described as the top threat to America’s military supremacy. (The Pentagon in recent days launched a new task force on China.)

CNBC reported that Biden will soon announce a review of key U.S. supply chains including semiconductors, high-capacity batteries, medical supplies and rare earth materials. The order is not expected to mention China, but the efforts aim at determining America’s reliance — economically and militarily — on a critical group of Chinese exports.

China is reportedly eyeing limits on exports of rare earth materials that are critical to manufacturing the F-35 fighter jet and other advanced weapons. Cotton acknowledged those reports and decried various policies that bolstered China’s leverage.

“China has a virtual monopoly on rare earth mining and processing,” Cotton said. “That means Beijing can ground our most advanced jets at almost any time just by cutting off access to new key inputs. It’s sad that a great nation would ever find itself in such a position. We can’t allow it to continue.”

Chinese bombers in strike exercises after US escalation in South China Sea
Advanced H-6J among at least 10 planes involved in drills which followed February dual carrier operation in disputed waterway
On Wednesday a US destroyer crossed the Taiwan Strait in a further escalation of tensions

At least 10 Chinese bombers took part in maritime strike exercises in the South China Sea, immediately after an escalation of US military presence in the disputed waterway.

Military experts said the exercises – which involved the Chinese navy’s most advanced H-6J bomber – aimed to show China’s capability of countering recent US activities, which included dual carrier operations in February.

One day after state broadcaster CCTV revealed details of the PLA exercises, a US destroyer transited the Taiwan Strait, further ratcheting up tensions in the region.

CCTV on Tuesday said more than 10 bombers, of two types, from the PLA’s Southern Theatre Command took part in the drill after the Lunar New Year holiday, which ended on February 17. These were later identified by the nationalist tabloid Global Times as the H-6J, which can carry up to six anti-ship cruise missiles, and the older, four-missile H-6G.

The drills featured long-distance attack exercises and boosted coordination between new and veteran pilots, the CCTV report said. In a follow-up report on Wednesday, CCTV said a naval aviation brigade from Southern Theatre Command had practised air confrontation tactic drills to sharpen real-combat capability.

Yue Gang, a retired PLA colonel, said the exercises aimed to counter recent US operations. In February these included dual operations by US aircraft carriers Theodore Roosevelt and Nimitz, along with their strike groups, in the South China Sea.

Vietnam strengthens fortifications in disputed South China Sea, satellite images reveal
MELBOURNE, Australia — Vietnam has continued to beef up its outposts in the disputed South China Sea with improved fortifications and infrastructure, although the scale of its activities is modest compared to that carried out by China, according to a new report.

Emplacements for anti-aircraft and coastal defense systems have been built on reclaimed land at West Reef and Sin Cowe Island, according to the report by the Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative, or AMTI, which is part of the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies.

It made its assessments based on analysis of satellite imagery in cooperation with Simularity, who says on its website that its software “automatically analyzes geospatial imagery and data to automatically find and classify unusual changes.”

The AMTI report added that over the last two years, “West Reef and Sin Cowe Island have seen the most drastic changes” of all of Vietnam’s outposts in the disputed Spratly Islands group, noting that most of the 70 acres of dry land at West Reef is reclaimed land, with a further 26 acres at Sin Cowe Island being similarly reclaimed.

The changes include the building of “several coastal defense installations, administrative buildings, concrete pads and bunkers, and a large tower structure presumably for communications of signals intelligence” at West Reef over the past two years, the report said.

Meanwhile, Sin Cowe Island saw the construction of an array of installations on its northern coastline, including tunnels, coastal fortifications and bunkers, the report noted. These are in the form of circular or semicircular concrete pads attached by a short road to a hardened bunker, and are similar to the types of installations previously built on other Vietnamese-held islands and reefs in the area.

The installations are believed to be for mobile coastal defense artillery systems, although they could also in theory hold longer-ranged system such as the IMI Systems-made Extended Range Artillery rocket system or land-based anti-ship missile systems, which would bring China’s bases on its own reclaimed islands within range.

AMTI also noted that Vietnam made smaller upgrades to other islands under its control over the past two years, including new buildings and a dome believed to be housing an “unknown sensing or communications system” at Pearson Reef, Namyit and the Spratly Islands.

South China Sea: PLA stages live-fire missile drill, US Navy on Paracels patrol

Chinese military tests response to repeated attack far offshore, state media report
Beijing think tank says US unarmed ocean surveillance vessel has been near disputed islands since Tuesday

There are fresh signs from the Chinese and the American armed forces that tensions over the South China Sea will continue under the new US administration.

The Chinese military’s Southern Theatre Command conducted a live-fire drill to test its response to repeated missile attacks in a “far sea”, state broadcaster CCTV reported on Saturday without saying when or where the exercise took place.

The drill involved the guided-missile destroyer Yinchuan, guided-missile frigate Hengyang, the amphibious dock landing ship Wuzhishan, and the support ship Chagan Hu, according to the report.

The Southern Theatre Command is responsible for overseeing the vast waters claimed by China in the South China Sea.

At the same time, the US has been stepping up reconnaissance activities in the area. The South China Sea Strategic Situation Probing Initiative said a US surveillance ship had been sailing around the Paracel Islands
    since Tuesday.

“USNS Impeccable is sailing around the Paracel Islands, and where is the destination? This kind of regular track points is unusual for a reconnaissance ship in this area,” the Beijing think tank said on Twitter on Friday.

The US also sent a reconnaissance aircraft to fly over the South China Sea off the coast of Taiwan on Saturday, the think tank said in another post.

The USNS Impeccable was at the centre of a confrontation in 2009 when the unarmed ocean surveillance vessel was shadowed by five Chinese ships off the southern island of Hainan. The incident sparked a diplomatic row between Beijing and Washington.

France stopping by the region again.

South China Sea: how the French navy is charting its own course between China and the US

France prepares to send amphibious assault ship and frigate to pass through disputed waters in its annual Jeanne d’Arc military mission
Military observers say Beijing has been restrained in its reaction

France is stepping up its military presence in the South China Sea with a strategically balanced approach to avoid increasing tension with Beijing.

After sending the nuclear attack submarine Émeraude and naval support ship Seine through the South China Sea in early February, France is preparing another transit to put pressure on Beijing’s claims on the waterway by sending an amphibious assault ship, the Tonnerre, and the frigate Surcouf to pass through the disputed waters twice during its annual Jeanne d’Arc mission, which started on February 18.

According to observers, the moves could be seen as France implementing its 2019 Indo-Pacific Strategy, which calls for it to increase its presence in the region and defend freedom of navigation and the rules-based international order.

The warships will avoid passing through the Taiwan Strait, a flashpoint in US-China tensions, but it appears the French side is not ruling out changing its route.

Royal Navy to defy Beijing with patrols in South China Sea

Britain’s defence strategy will “tilt” toward the Indo-Pacific region where the Royal Navy will have a regular presence in the future, the head of the armed forces has said.

General Sir Nick Carter, chief of the defence staff, said China was a growing great power presenting an opportunity and a “strategic challenge” for the UK.

He said the long-awaited integrated review of Britain’s defence and foreign policy would outline how more military engagement in the Asia-Pacific region was a “no-brainer”.

HMS Queen Elizabeth will set sail on its maiden grand voyage as the centrepiece of a carrier strike group in May this year and is expected to reach east Asia by late summer.

PLA starts month-long drill in push to modernise soldiers while resisting US operations

The PLA is stepping up its drills and soldiers must meet real combat and joint operation requirements to improve the Chinese military’s fighting power
We will not lose an inch of our land left to us by our ancestors,’ says China’s defence ministry

The People’s Liberation Army kicked off a month-long military exercise in the South China Sea on Monday, as the United States steps up reconnaissance operations and France sends military vessels to the region.

The prolonged PLA drill comes as it intensifies joint operation exercises to help build the Chinese military to meet modern warfare requirements.

China is conducting its military exercise in a zone with a radius of 5km (3.1 miles) west of the Leizhou Peninsula in Guangdong province, according to a navigation restriction notice released by the China Maritime Safety Administration on Friday. The notice warned that other vessels should not enter the area during March, but did not provide further details.

The naval exercises are taking place as China vows to firmly defend its territorial integrity.

“We will not lose an inch of our land left to us by our ancestors,” the defence ministry said in a statement on Monday. “We are determined to maintain the peace and stability of the South China Sea. We oppose any nations creating tensions and stepping up military presence under the name of freedom of navigation.”

In addition to the drill, state-run China Central Television reported that three theatre commands – the Northern, Eastern and Southern – staged joint operation naval exercises in the Yellow Sea, and East and South China seas in recent days.

Without giving dates of the drills, CCTV broadcast video footage showing exercises taking place over several days and nights and including the use of missiles to hit target surface vessels and aircraft.

The video showed armed helicopters attending accidents while delivering logistic support to Chinese bases, on reconnaissance missions and in operations to replenish ships on the high seas.

The exercises come as the US has also been sending aircraft and naval ships to the South and East China seas. The PLA reacted with drills as “real combat scenarios”.

“The US used to send spy jets every two days and now the PLA takes the visits of their American counterparts as usual operations,” Beijing-based military expert Zhou Chenming said.

According to monitoring data released by the South China Sea Strategic Situation Probing Initiative, a Beijing-based think tank, the US sent reconnaissance various aircraft – including an MQ-4C maritime reconnaissance drone, an EP-3E spy plane and an RC-135U strategic reconnaissance aircraft – to the South China Sea on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. It sent the USNS Impeccable ocean surveillance ship to the region on Friday.

Brief analysis looking at deterring China in the South China Sea, 16 Page PDF with some good insight.

Trends, Timelines, and Uncertainty: An Assessment of the State of Cross-Strait (SCS) Deterrence

I will specifically address the ability of the United States and Taiwan to deter military aggression by the People’s Republic of China (PRC) across the Taiwan Strait, both now and in the future. I will then examine PRC and U.S.
capabilities, points of vulnerability for China (this term hereafter referring specifically to the PRC), and important points of uncertainty. Finally, I will offer policy recommendations about some of the steps that might be considered to improve cross-Strait deterrence, in the hopes of avoiding what would be, were it to occur, a catastrophic conflict for all concerned.

Taiwan reports largest ever incursion by Chinese air force
TAIPEI (Reuters) - Twenty Chinese military aircraft entered Taiwan's air defence identification zone on Friday, in the largest incursion yet reported by the island's defence ministry and marking a dramatic escalation of tension across the Taiwan Strait.

The island's defence ministry said the air force deployed missiles to "monitor" the incursion into the southwestern part of its air defence identification zone. It also said its planes warned the Chinese aircraft, including by radio.

It marked the largest incursion to date by the Chinese air force since Taiwan's defence ministry began disclosing almost daily Chinese military flights over the waters between the southern part of Taiwan and the Taiwan-controlled Pratas Islands in the South China Sea last year.

Some of the Chinese aircraft flew in the airspace to the south of Taiwan and passed through the Bashi Channel which separates the island from the Philippines, Taiwan's defence ministry said in a statement.

A person familiar with Taiwan's security planning told Reuters the Chinese military was conducting exercises that would simulate an operation against U.S. warships that sail through the Bashi Channel.

China, which claims Taiwan as its own territory, has stepped up military activities near the democratic island in recent months, a move Taiwan says jeopardizes regional stability.

The presence of so many Chinese combat aircraft on Friday's mission - Taiwan said it was made up of four nuclear-capable H-6K bombers and 10 J-16 fighter jets, among others - was unusual and came as the island's air force suspended all training missions after two fighter jet crashes this week.

There was no immediate comment from China's defence ministry. Beijing routinely says such exercises are nothing unusual and are designed to show the country's determination to defend its sovereignty.

Earlier on Friday, Taiwan and the United States signed their first agreement under the administration of new president Joe Biden, establishing a Coast Guard Working Group to coordinate policy, after China's passing of a law that allows its coast guard to fire on foreign vessels.

While the United States, like most countries, has no formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan, it is bound by law to help Taiwan defend itself and is the island's main arms supplier.

China confirms that its aircraft carrier formation conducts training near Taiwan

On Monday, the Ministry of National Defense of the People’s Republic of China officially reported that the Liaoning aircraft carrier formation conducted the training exercise in waters around Taiwan.

In a statement presented by the Ministry, the Chinese PLA Navy Spokesperson Senior Captain Gao Xiucheng said it was a routine training exercise organized according to the annual work plan to test the troops’ training effectiveness and beef up their capability to safeguard national sovereignty, security and development interests.

“In the future, the PLA Navy will continue to carry out such exercise and training activities on a regular basis as planned,” said the spokesperson.

It’s also important to note that Japan’s Defense Ministry announced late Sunday that the Liaoning carrier and five other warships were spotted Saturday sailing south through international waters in the narrow passageway that separates Okinawa’s main island and Miyako Island. The vessels did not enter Japanese waters or its contiguous zone.

In a release, Japan’s Defense Ministry said the Chinese aircraft carrier was escorted by Type 055 destroyer Nanchang (101), Type 052D destroyers Chengdu (120) and Taiyuan (131), Type 054A frigate Huanggang (577), Type 901 fast combat support ship Hulun Lake (965).

China's going to keep the Navy busy.

U.S. Navy deploys Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group to South China Sea
The U.S. Navy is steaming a massive Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group into strategically vital areas off the South China Sea.

According to a recent service news release, the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group (TRCSG) entered the South China Sea April 4 to conduct routine operations.

This is the second time TRCSG has entered the South China Sea during its 2021 deployment to U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations.

“It is great to be back in the South China Sea to reassure our allies and partners that we remain committed to freedom of the seas,” said Rear Adm. Doug Verissimo, commander, Carrier Strike Group Nine. “Over the course of the strike group’s deployment, we have demonstrated our commitment to the rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific region by operating with our friends from Australia, India, Japan, Malaysia and South Korea. We look forward to continuing to sail together with all those that embrace our collective vision of security and stability in one of the most important regions in the world.”

While in the South China Sea, the strike group will conduct fixed and rotary-wing flight operations, maritime strike exercises, anti-submarine operations, coordinated tactical training, and more.

“I could not be more proud of the hard work and professionalism that this crew has shown every day during this deployment,” said Capt. Eric Anduze, USS Theodore Roosevelt’s commanding officer. “Our Sailors’ tenacity and warfighting prowess is unmatched and is a testament to our Navy’s resolve to maintain free and prosperous seas.”

The TRCSG consists of USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 11, the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill (CG 52), Destroyer Squadron 23, and the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Russell (DDG 59).

Philippines accuses China of plans to occupy more South China Sea 'features'

The Philippines defence minister on Sunday accused Beijing of planning to occupy more "features" in the disputed South China Sea, in an escalating war of words over Chinese vessels in the waters.

China claims almost the entirety of the resource-rich sea and has asserted its stance by building up small shoals and reefs into military bases with airstrips and port facilities.

Taiwan, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei all have rival claims to the waters, which incorporate strategically crucial shipping lanes and could harbour oil and gas deposits.

A fleet of more than 200 Chinese ships that sparked a diplomatic row last month after parking at Whitsun Reef off the Philippines is now scattered across the contested Spratly Islands.

Manila has called on Beijing to withdraw the "maritime militia" vessels from the area, saying their presence is unlawful.

China has refused, insisting they are fishing boats and are allowed to operate there.

But Defence Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said the vessels were there for other reasons.

"The continued presence of Chinese maritime militias in the area reveals their intent to further occupy features in the West Philippine Sea," he said.

Lorenzana pointed to China's seizure of the Philippine-claimed Scarborough Shoal and Mischief Reef as previous examples of them "brazenly violating" his country's sovereignty.

On Saturday, the outspoken Lorenzana rejected China's claims that the boats parked at Whitsun Reef -- and where dozens remained last week -- had been seeking shelter from bad weather.

"I am no fool. The weather has been good so far, so they have no other reason to stay there," he said.

    "Get out of there."

The Chinese embassy in Manila called Lorenzana's statement "perplexing" and urged authorities to avoid "unprofessional remarks which may further fan irrational emotions".

Beijing often invokes the so-called nine-dash line to justify its apparent historic rights over most of the South China Sea, and it has ignored a 2016 international tribunal decision that declared this assertion as without basis.

I think the first thing we need to so is to rename it to something else, as the name, South China Sea, sounds like its already theirs to begin with and we are the ones trying to take it away, etc.

    Any suggestions Rob?
