    Question Synthetic Oil (5W-30)

I have used Valvoline in the past and it's not bad (PP performed better with idling and fuel economy though). The only other oil I'm thinking of using is the Rotella T6 but I've read they've gone to chit with the reformulation.

Is the consensus still Pennzoil Platinum? About to do my first oil change on my DD and I have used PP extensively in the past with great results. Not sure if the newer natural gas formulation has an effect but I'm curious to know what you guys have been using lately.

Gotta LOL at the notion that rotella has gone to ****. Ricer science. Stick with the T6.

Pennzoil Platinum is still the way to go. It’s the highest quality oil on the market right now (Per: BobTheOilGuy). I just put 5w-40 PP Euro into my BMW and my engine is smooth and whisper quiet. I was using Royal Purple before this.

I bought mine through Napa for dirt cheap during the holidays.

Yup! Bought 2 5qt jugs for $22 each at the store. Amazon has the Ultra for $39.99 but Platinum is more than enough for my dd.

These. Go make an oil thread on any auto forum and you'll get flamed. This is THE most beat to death topic.

You can make a concoction of 100 different oils of all different weights and mix them all together. Pour that down your motor and it you wouldn't even know.

"I just switched to 5 time distilled 16w70 made in the farms of bavaria. Paid $99 a quart. I swear that my engine runs every so slightly better/smoother and it gained 3-5hp".

Besides that, none of us keep our cars long enough to even care or worry about engine scarring.... Unless you're lapping the circuit track all day everyday.

Been a Mobil 1 user for the longest time. I've been working on cars professonally which means I know nothing compared to "car guys" (lol) but from what I've seen, you can't go wrong. Seems the other brands always come out with some new "reformulation" only to come up with another a few years later. Must be a reason for that. M1 modifies their formula some, but no drastic reformulations. Also note, everyone seems to use M1 as the base line, the one to beat. Also, they are available at walmart or anywhere for a decent price.

Recently been dipping into Amsoil. Was really turned off by the way it's marketed. Results so far have impressed me. I guess we will see long term.

Doing my research I found not only some independent testing done such as PROJECT FARM" on youtube, but also some scientific studies where they send the oil into blackstone for a detailed break down of what's in the oil. The detergent factor in Amsoil is unmatched. Also has great lubrication qualities. If your engine is going to have a failure caused by oil, it's most likely going to be dirt, causing sludge, or not able to contain debris and scratching things up. Amsoil not only handles dirt but will neutralize acids, salts, and other contaminates. The oil that beat them all when it comes to just lubrication factors it was Redline. It's very slick but has little detergent, so it's more for a vehicle that you change the oil a lot. These two oils are on a different tier classificaton than the others. Most of the rest are basically conventional with a synthetic additive. Royal Purple also scored very highly, especially when it came to film strength. Yes bob the oil guy site is pretty good, but there are plenty. Just make sure they aren't sponsored or the person isn't a dealer. Yes, some of these Amsoil dealers are absolute phaggots, but the product is good.

BRotlela, Valvoline, Mobil1, Castrol, Penzoil, etc...they're all good oils. If you want a peace of mind, get a lab test from Blackstone

If you're just looking for oil for your street car/daily there's really no point in overthinking this. Amsoil, Motul, etc are also good if your have a high HP car or something that sees heavy use, but there's really no point of paying $12/quart for AMSOIL for your Honda Accord and then dumping it every 5k miles.
