Leon Spinks -- former undisputed heavyweight boxing champ -- who defeated Muhammad Ali in 1978 ... has died after a 5 year battle with cancer.
Spinks passed away Friday evening at the age of 67 ... surrounded by his wife Brenda and several other close friends and family.

I remember the Ali Spinks fight. I had to do a bit of googling to confirm my memory, but Michael Spinks fought on the undercard that night.

The day after Spinks/Ali, I took my physical and Joined the Navy (3 month delayed entry), never forget watching it on TV at that crappy hotel they put us up at in Oakland.

Seemed like all of the big fights in the late 70's were still on regular tv.

RIP Leon. He, along with his brother Michael, were awesome boxers back in the day. There were rumors that Ali liked him so much that he "let" Leon win the heavyweight title (which Ali won back in the rematch).
