You "sell" the stock now at its current price even though you don't own it yet, then later you "buy" it for whatever price it has when your short expires. You're basically betting that the price will drop, as opposed to buying the stock which is betting it will go up.

Autists noticed that these guys were way overextended on their short, meaning they had to "buy" a lot of it soon, and pumped the price to an insane amount, which will cause billions of dollars to be transferred.
