I was supposed to get a $400,000+ bonus and my boss reneged - what to do?

    Basically title

Graduated college in May 2019 with a degree in civil engineering. I had some trouble finding a job right out of school that met my salary requirements so I moved back in with my parents to conserve money. In Jan 2020 found a government contractor paying in the $50k range - not amazing but I was getting pretty hungry at that point so I applied and went to the interview.

Got an offer letter for $49k/yr and I tried to negotiate with them showing how the average grad with my skills makes more like $56k but they wouldn't budge. However they really played up the benefits saying they have good medical, dental, a small pension and a bonus over $400,000. They also wanted me to live overseas and I'm working with mostly foreign nationals though my boss is American.

Obviously the bonus caught my eye so I went ahead and accepted the offer making sure it was in writing on my employment contract. But now the end of the year has come and gone and nobody at the company has said anything about my bonus. I check my bank account daily for the money to deposit. It's in writing on my contract as a "401k plan". What do you think I should do?

Lmao if you thought they were going to give you a 400k bonus for a job making 50k a year and you have barely worked. Take your 49k and get some good work experience.

brah it honestly sounds like you either misunderstood or they tricked you. Either way, by the way this sounds, it looks like they mean they will match your 401k contributions up to $400,000 as long as your work there

    Pretty much this.

They never intended on giving you 8 years worth of salary as a signing bonus.

OP why the fukk would they give you a $400,000 bonus? It was also your first job. You're confusing a 401k with a bonus retard.

Probably way too technical for this thread but the IRC-415(g) limit for 401k plans is $57k. This is the maximum total contribution from both employee and sponsor. So if you thought they were putting 400k in your 401k lol you're not even close.

He could work there for the next 50 years, when his "matching funds" goal is reached, and then quit.

You should probably take your contract and shove it up your ass 400k times.

A quick Google search would tell you that 401k is about matching meaning that they will give you as much of a bonus as you put in up to $401,000. So if you put in $401,000 of your money they will put in same amount of theirs.

bro when they say 401k matching they mean...

you'll get your bonus when you make $401,000 dollars, then they'll match it.
    Lifts:
    Squat: 460x1
    Bench: 400x1
    Deadlift: 575x1
    OHP: 250x2
    Weight: 180 lbs.

Don't have heroes; look up to no one. Because as long as someone's leading the way, the best you'll ever be is second.

I'd just laugh and forget about, that is like a couple of days pocket cash. Not that big of a deal.

What do you think I should do?

    .
Check your 401K plan instead of your bank account?

P.S. They can't put that much into a 401K account.

This, lol. They wouldn't budge on $65k but where happy to pay you $49k with $400k bonus.

You either misread or misunderstood, or its a scam, or its not actually what happened.
