Is Nioh any good?

Going through my backlog and trying to find something to play. Tried to start Borderlands 3 yesterday but couldn't get into it (enjoyed 1 and 2). So now I'm sitting here looking at Nioh, which I bought forever ago and have yet to play. As a huge fan of the Souls series as well as Onimusha back in the day, am I gonna love this game or nah?

You might. It's a chittier Souls in almost every way.

Where it shines the most though is the combat. That has a ton of depth to it. Each weapon has different stances and you can use a variety of different power up abilities. There's a solid amount of armor options with their own ups and downs too. The main knock against it here is the looter aspects (finding the same weapon you have that's slightly better over and over; same with armor). Personally, it wasn't for me. The level design was bad (and the game is made up of individual levels you fight through, not a connected world), the enemy variety was low, and the bosses are all kind of chitty/gimmicky (you defeat any one boss in a specific way, and if you don't do that specific thing it's not happening; bosses also don't have the same unpredictability and attack variation the Soulsborne games do), the game overall is janky, and it looks rough graphically. Still, there are a lot of people who swear by it.

IMO if you want a great game to scratch that Soulsborne itch, look into Surge 2 (or Sekiro if you're looking for that feudal Japan aesthetic).

Ahh ok thanks for the info brah! I do enjoy looter type games (Diablo, Borderlands etc..) so perhaps that aspect won't bother me as much.

I actually have Sekiro as well. I played that for a bit when it first came out but didn't really get into it. Might give it another shot.

I'll look into Surge 2 as well.

I actually have Sekiro as well. I played that for a bit when it first came out but didn't really get into it. Might give it another shot.

If you do manage to get into it, I heard Nioh 2 fixed a lot of the problems I had with the first (level design, abilities, and enemy variety are apparently huge upgrades). It also lets you create your own character (the first game has a fixed main character), so that's something to look forward to.

Nioh is good but it has alot of cheap difficulty.

Every enemy kills you with 2-3 hits (bosses usually one shot you) and it has alot of flaws.


For example, many enemies that are knocked down have to finish their animation so you can hit them, but they can hit you you while you are getting back up.

- 80% of enemies have hyper armor so can’t be staggered, you do too but its useless because you die with 2 hits.

- Larger enemies take 10-15 hits to kill, smaller ones 5-7, but you die with one or two

- You can block 2-4 attacks, but you can literally smack a low level enemy 10 times before their guard breaks.


Basically unlike souls games, Nioh enemies have their own set of bull**** rules to make the game harder.


Because of this the game ends up resorting to you running around, landing 2 hits, then run around again, rinse and repeat, add to that the slow ass stamina regen and yeah its pretty chit



You know that feeling in Sekiro where you deflect everything, or when you dodge enemies perfectly in dark souls and you feel like a boss? Yeah that ain't happening here. Game is good if you get over all the bull****

Not hard but fair like dark souls. Wouldn't recomend personally.

i couldn't get past like the 3rd dungeon cuz of how repetitive and boring it was.

i heard the 2nd game is much better tho.
