These are the wheels I have on my Tundra, and they almost look dark bronze.
Chrome / gloss black are both a “no” from me.

Honestly I think chrome rims look good on on a lot of luxury sedans and SUV's. On sports cars however I am usually not such a fan, but the more substantial GT cars can make it work. Overall though I think silver and gunmetal looks the best on sportscars, I got gunmetal on my rims for my Z.
As for paint I am all about a nice grey these days, you never get tired of it.

When it comes to wheels these days I prefer to do some crazy $hit that stands out...
I've done Gloss black... Matte Black... Chrome... polished... machined finish with chrome lip / black inlay etc. etc..etc...
I have been trying to convince my wife her black Denali needs a set of 24" polished copper Forgi's with a black lip... then black out most of the chrome trim and hit it with some copper accent's... HNNNNGGG!!!

my black zr1 with chrome wheels disagrees with your statement, I think chrome wheels when done well actually looks really good esp on certain cars and darker colors

I've got a mix -- rose gold on the g-wagon (just got these back, turned out awesome), black on the Lambo, copper on the GTR, gray on the Lexus, and silver on the Mustang.
