Jesus did exist and this makes things interesting

I can't just outright dismiss the bible, for all of its faults, such a central point in the story did happen. Things like theology or denominations are not as important as this. But it does get exhausting and confusing how there was such a disaster in transmitting what was actually said by Jesus and what he taught.

I don’t think anyone really doubts that a person named Jesus actually existed. And he may have even claimed to be the son of God.

    Things that did not happen:
    -he walked on water
    -immaculate conception
    -necromancing
    -resurrection
-turning a small amount of food into a large amount of food with nothing
    -Jewish exodus from Egypt
-burning bush as a form of God
    -angels
    -Bible creation story
    -world wide “great” flood
    -etc

Historicity of Jesus is debated. But even if there were such a person, it is impossible to turn water into wine without nuclear reactions. So tell me where Jesus built his reactors and with what understanding of physics. If you concede that he didn't only use water, he'd still need a chitload of energy.

I mean the further back u go the more likely it is all myths. We have no idea any of these people really existed or what kinds of people they were. So much is shrouded in legend. Tell a guy a rumor and watch it bounce around the room and see what you hear at the end. Now imagine this over 1000 fuking years. We honestly have zero clue what happened back then.

It's possible Jesus was a charismatic politician or leader of some sort. Hard to say.

Actually, there is evidence of a great mediterranean sea flood which, given the limited travel of the time, would have flooded the known "world" at the time. The quran and the epic of Gilgamesh both tell of this.

    No there isn't.

There was no such flood in the last 100,000 years.

the flood is interesting, did something happen or is it just symbolical of something.

I'm sure at some point, somewhere, there was a large flood and the years of hyperbole lead to the myth of a "world ending" flood. Interestingly, most cultures have some large flood myth so there may have been some ancestral human community that had to endure a flood at some point though I doubt it was on the absurd scale that bible thumpers bring up.

Also a lot of people underestimate the extent of the known world. A human can walk about 25-30 miles a day. You can cover most of the known world over the course of your lifetime. Ancient humans were still trading and traveling, just not enmasse. Europeans were clearly aware of Chinese and Indians for quite some time, for example.

    Christianity = New Testament

The Old Testament became irrelevant after Jesus came. Stop citing it to attack Christianity.

Obviously, Jesus performed many scientifically implausible feats. But I have noticed that Christians seem to be much happier than non-Christians, and atheists in particular. It would probably be wise to try to convince yourself that Christianity is true because with today's technology, it's likely the best way to cope with death (eternal life vs. nothingness). If you die, and Christianity turns out to be wrong, you will never find out: Heads you win; tails you never learn you lost.

The noachian megaflood is the one currently poised in the correct era to be lined up with the multiple end of the world flood stories.

Just because you add chian after it doesn't mean it is scientific or that it ever happened.

Keep believing the world is just and life is fair. There is no order to things except that imposed by the laws of physics. Life is a tragedy. It is our quest to understand that gives us some nobility beyond being wretched cogs in a clockwork machine. We have the privilege of understanding our inevitable fates.

na ive gone down that path before. the biggest problem is theology, then of course things like the ark just didnt happen. but i agree, if you pick a P.C denomination and go with it, youll be happier

The question is what does historical Jesus even mean. If we aren’t talking about the divine being that performed miracles, then what are we talking about? Some Jewish preacher who lived circa 20 ad? Why does it matter whether this person existed so much?

Of note, the question of the historicity of even that kind of person could still go either way. You hear a lot about “vast consensus of scholars at least think there was a historical Jesus”.....well a lot of the scholars who even bother to comment on this issue are of the biblical variety, and are employed in theology departments, teach religion at Christian and other schools, and make a living studying and teaching the NT and its context. It’s no surprise whatsoever this variety of scholar doesn’t deny a Jesus existed.

The actual evidence? Well...nothing written by Jesus. No one contemporary writing about him. No archeological evidence. What we have is stories and mentions of him at a later time after death, and some of these stories (gospels) suspiciously attempting to match OT prophecy to a T. Ehh...again, whether a Jesus existed, which could go either way, isn’t that meaningful....the miracles of course aren’t evidenced.

There is a really good book out there called, history: science or fiction. A lot of what we may believe to be true could very well be a lie. It is worth a read.

well it matters because its a topic atheists typically are not an expert in and they are going against what the experts say, like in the video i linked. youre the ilk that always goes with the establishment, well in this case the 'establishment' agrees jesus did exist. its just fun to expose when you dont go along with it. but this is an aside and not the point of this thread

how can you be an expert about the gospels and not be of 'biblical variety' that is a ridiculous statement. so you cant study the thing you are making an assessment on?

Don't be so quick to dismiss this book. He's a very intelligent mathematician/russian definitely no crackpot.

It also goes without saying that most of what we know is wrong or not completely true.

As a side note, history in general is one of those things that is never truly accurate because there are a lot of information that is hidden or misinterpreted. Just take a look at how difficult it is for everyone to come to the same conclusion about the election.
