For some reason, the Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese people on this site don't want to associate with them. But they are included in the term "Asian" -
https://www.census.gov/topics/popula...ace/about.html
Asian – A person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian subcontinent including, for example, Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippine Islands, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Yeah, I think there needs to be a better term. I use Desi to describe South Asians, and Asian to describe South East and East Asians.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desi
Oriental is now considered offensive, but it's better than lumping South, South East, and East Asian people together. If You Don't Like To Talk About Your Feelings, This Might Help...

Nope, the United States Census has authority over demographic categorization in USA. And they say

Asian – A person having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian subcontinent including, for example, Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippine Islands, Thailand, and Vietnam.

This. You say 'Asian' to anyone in the UK and they always think of brown desi people.
Chinese, Japanese and Koreans are typically referred to as 'Oriental' or just stereotypical 'Chinese' since many Brits can't tell the difference.
There's not many Orientals in the UK except for students and the UK has a large South Asian population who's families has been here since the 50's and 60's.Last edited by Vascularmanlet; 12-30-2020 at 06:51 PM.
