***OFFICIAL*** 2021 Misc 52 books in 52 weeks thread - do you even read bro??

The Misc 52 books in 52 weeks challenge is back for another year!

    *What is the challenge*
The goal is to read 52 books in 52 weeks. 1 book a week is an aggressive, but doable, pace.

    *Why is the challenge*
To improve your brain, be entertained, and anything in between. In this digital age, reading improves focus and memory, doesn't screw with your sleep like the blue light from your TV, and if you have a library card, is totally free. Plus, once you have the habit it's a very enjoyable pastime.

    *WHO is the challenge*
The challenge is every miscer who wanted to make a better version of himself or herself. Everyone who's in this thread, trying to read a little more and set a personal best on brain power curls.

*What if I don't want to read 52 books, can I still participate in the challenge*
Of course! We all have different goals for physical fitness, the same is true of our mental gains. Read for pleasure, read to learn. Read 1 book or 100, you're welcome in this thread. You should probably push yourself A LITTLE, whether in amount you read or trying out a new subject matter, but do you.

    *What should I read?*
You'll find tons of recommendations ITT, and here's a link to the 2019 thread and Time's 100 greatest Novels list to get your juices flowing.
    https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/...ime_100_Novels
    https://forum.bodybuilding.com/showt...hp?t=176593311

    *Are audiobooks reading?*
Different people have different opinions, but if you're asking me: No. Reading is moving your eyes across a page or screen, looking at a graphic image of words. Audiobooks are not the physical act of reading. What most people are ACTUALLY asking is do audiobooks "count". I say yes - you're moving the ideas/story from the author's brain, into yours. That's the end goal of physically reading a book, accomplished by a different means. For what it's worth I avoid non-fiction audiobooks since I personally can't retain as much of the author's ideas and arguments. But I actually PREFER fiction in audio format - if you get a good narrator (Ray Porter, Bronson Pinchot, Scott Brick) the performance really pulls you in.

*The Book brahs thread was started by Invictus. He handed me the reigns in 2020, but respect always to our founder and OG. 'Mirin.

*Check if your local library has "Overdrive" or "Hoopla". Both are free loans of digital books - ebooks or audio, straight to your device. If you have a Kindle, Overdrive will deliver loans straight to it - GOAT way to read a lot for free.

*Use spoiler tags to post your reading lists

    My 2020 list
    Spoiler!

*How can I read a book a week?
The simplest pacing method is to look at the page count of your book and commit to reading 10% a day. For an average 200 page book this is 20 pages a day. This should take 15-20 minutes for an experienced reader. 10% a day is a book every 10 days, or 36.5 books a year. Read a little more on weekends, airplanes or vacation, and you are nearly there. Otherwise, 15% of your book each day kills 54.75 books a year. You can do this.

This is one of the friendliest, most positive threads on this board, so if you have any questions, just jump right in.

STRONG MINDS IN STRONG BODIES, MISC. 2021, we outchea.

    Awwww yeah, 1rd.

    Edit: chit close enough

Gonna do something a little different this year. A chick at work is following a 52 book "prompt" challenge and I told her I'd do it with her. A few of the prompts are cringe, but I'm game. https://booklistqueen.com/reading-challenge-2021/

I've already proven I won't ever keep up with this thread, but I will tell the Misc about the books I've read in recent weeks:

    1. The Complete Maus - Art Spiegelman

A graphic novel about a Jewish man and his wife who survived the WW2 and Auschwitz. The Nazis are drawn as cats and the Jews as mice.

    2. Darkness at Noon - Arthur Koestler

This is the greatest takedown of Communism I've ever read. It's about the fictional interrogation of a high ranking Soviet official during Stalin's purges of anyone who was a potential threat to him.

    3. Hillbilly Elegy - JD Vance

I made a thread about this one a few days ago. It's about a young man who started out poor and raised by drug addicts and alcoholics. He eventually became a marine and graduated from Yale Law.

    4. I'm currently reading President Obama's recently released memoirs titled A Promised Land.

I'm only 35 pages in but, despite my fundamental disagreements with his politics, his writing skill is impressive.

    Innnnn!

This past year I finished 34 books. That's a lot more than I've read in years. Don't have a set goal for 2021 but would like to finish more than 34.

In, finally started pleasure reading more halfway through this year after a long hiatus.

Recommend because I haven’t seen on anybody’s list yet:

Memoir: Green Lights- Matthew McConaughey (actually really well written and entertaining, would recommend kindle version for photos and interesting font)

Straight to Hell- John Lefevre (Wall Street and degenmaxxing, written by former GSElevator gossip guy for any old S&P crew)

Uncanny Valley- Anna Wiener (Silicon valley and tech unexpectedly good)

Fiction: A Gentleman in Moscow- Amor Towles (Russian badass and supreme gentleman, cucks the commies)

The Lincoln Lawyer (better than the movie)

    In.

I just finishing the first of JD Robb's "In Death" series. She's a very good writer, and the futuristic setting isn't distracting or even highlighted, but I don't know if I'll read any of the others or not.

Next for me is the latest Mickey Haller (Lincoln Lawyer) novel, and while I have no desire to build a big library, I don't mind owning the books that merit a second read so (at my request) my wife bought me Don Winslow's The Force and another 4-5 books for Christmas. The Force will probably be Book 3 for 2021.

Happy New Year!!! So, starting my 2021 list:

    (1) Naked In Death by JD Robb (8/10)

Loving this read. Seen the movies but somehow the book is better. Less Hollywood? Will write up a review when finished.

Finished last year at 38 books. Highest number so far, although the page count was lower than prior years so it doesn't really count. Couldn't find the motivation to do reviews, but will pick it up again this year. Going for >14.000 pages this year. Let's get it brahs.

I completely dropped the ball on 2020 but I’m in for 2021. Personally will be happy with 26 books but we’ll see how it goes. These challenges tend to push me towards shorter books so I can pump my numbers but I may try to include a few longer ones (thinking Count of Monte Cristo).

    First books up:

    1) Mount Fitz Roy by Scott Sigler

The decade-plus in the making sequel to his first novel EARTHCORE. Scott was one of the first authors to distribute his books as podcast, I have very fond memories of listening to EARTHCORE on my og iPod. When I found out it had a sequel I set aside what I was reading and started this immediately.

Mainlined this in a week - it has everything you'd want in a sequel: more action, more thrills, major reveals, and the audiobook is a massive 25+ hours read by Ray Porter!

Not a good first book to read from this author but if you liked the first one you'll love this.

Use this as more of a book club thread to find books but I probably nail 40 books per year with the odd re-read.

Just smashed all 8 of the cradle books b2b. Bummed I have to wait for releases now. Working on the same authors traveller series now.

Fingers crossed for doors of stone this year..... Lol.

    Let's go!

Last year I finished 20 books.

This year the goal is to read more than that.

    Currently reading;

I Am Pilgrim - Terry Hayes
Augustus: First Emperor of Rome - Adrian Goldsworthy

    Both good so far.
