who think they are revenue generators.
Unless you are an investment banker, trader, or something for a fund, finance brahs who are in charge of some financial reporting almost accounting type roles are a cost function to do a necessary task.
I am a software engineer myself but lol at thinking you are MVP at companies that sell software. That's sales. Software means nothing without customers.
B-b-but I have a critical function at the company! Yeah, by that logic so does HR as businesses can't run without people.

Absolutely true.
I'm a finance manager and I have no delusions that senior execs view me as nothing more than a nuisance (General & Administrative expense).
While finance/accounting work has traditionally been viewed as relatively safe from layoffs during downturns, we're in uncharted territory now that work-from-culture will likely be with us for years.
So the question senior execs are discussing is this: why should we pay this guy a Los Angeles salary when we can just hire some guy from Oregon, have him work remotely and pay him a lower salary? They're in the same time zone, they have comparable education and skill sets, so why not reduce the cost?
It makes perfect business sense, and I would be thinking the same thing if I were a decision-making executive.
The only way to have job security in the future is to be tied to the revenue generating process. An hourly technician working on the production floor will have more job security than me because he's directly tied to the production/revenue generating process while I'm nothing more than expensive overhead.

I don't think this really has much to do with software engineers or finance analysts at all. I think it pretty much applies to most roles at large companies that take any skill and have the potential to give an inflated ego, tons of project managers have an inflated sense of self importance at my company too and a lot of them were shocked when they were made redundant. If you work for someone else you're ultimately just a number until you reach the upper echelons like being a board member etc. Your boss may value you, but your bosses boss barely knows who you are or gives a crap, and your bosses bosses boss is happy to get rid of you at the drop of a hat if something better/more economical comes along, or if you become a problem in any way.
I'm not sure why these people annoy you though, stop concerning yourself/worrying with what other people do/think and simply worry about yourself. It's just people being slightly naïve to how cut throat the world of business really is, they will eventually learn and their optimism will be crushed.

I'm in tech sales and have major, major respect for Engineers, programmers, coders etc. If they do their jobs correctly -- it allows me to sell a world class product, and makes my job infinitely easier. However -- our VP of Product has this habit of poking holes in my strategy, deals etc. when I am in the middle of a large deal with a new customer.
25% of the time, he brings up valid concerns and questions -- 75% of the time, he is slowing the deal down and wasting everyone's time because he is so close-minded about WHY people buy the product and HOW they use it. I wish I could tell him to fuk off but such is life for a corporate cuck like me (ded fkn Srs)~focus on what you can control crew~

Sr. Software Engineer checking in.
What software engineer says otherwise? I'm constantly reminded we're overhead. But we're overhead that saves the company a chit-ton through automation.
I don't think there's a single dev that thinks he generates income.
We're income preservers, not generators.Misc Entrepreneur Crew

Seems like I’ve upset you.
And good to see your alt working hard. I like how you build them up over the years. However, your inability to control your emotions after being ravaged by the aleeboy exposes them.
Have a good one, dude. I’m done messing with you for the time being.

Some theory on this, basically that companies are filled with losers/clueless/sociopaths. Any major company is 10% of coworkers who actually create value and competitive differentiation for the enterprise, 80% who are drones, and 10% who are terrible at their job.
Of that 80% about half think they are in that top 10%. These are the corporate climbing worker bees. Can be replaced easily but think they are special and offer no unique skill outside of being smart and playing office politics really well. These people turn in the long hours, get pats on the heads and company corporate awards, but only receive slightly more pay or higher promotions than the other part of the 80% group. The other half of that 80% are just there for a paycheck and have no delusions of grandeur. 9-5ers who dont really look for meaning from working in a corporation.
The top 10% are those that create innovative products for the company, are senior execs, those that decide overall company strategy, those in charge of executing large scale projects/implementation, etc. These individuals would be a critical loss if they go elsewhere and are usually talented enough to do so easily or even start their own firm.

What's funny is brahs at the top of the ladder think they can use social skills/manipulation that they've learned throughout their life to keep you working for them. Like brah, I'm way smarter than you and I have a good estimate on how much revenue I generate, you're not paying me half of what I'm worth.

Because the education in India is complete chit. Talented Indian's will work for Indian companies not some guy in the U.S. You try to outsource your work to India = have fun losing money because of all the B.S. that's involved with dealing with Indian's. Same chit applies to outsourcing your work to Ukraine. Too many problems.
Luckily my job is to design the systems, not the actual implementation, but I feel sorry for the poor saps who are having to fix the problems caused by incompetent Indian's.

At the end of the day, everyone has their purpose. Yes good software is useless without anyone to sell it, but so is having sales people without anyone to build it. They're equally important IMO. I do think software devs (who have a business oriented mind) have an advantage though because you can always outsource sales, and learn how the sales pipeline works. Its not so easy the other way around. Usually relationships between sales people who have no idea how software systems are built trying to boss knowledgeable devs instead of working with them and listening to their input always ends up in disaster. Meanwhile devs can build their own software, hire a lead generation agency, learn the ins and outs, stand on their own two feet, and generate income.
If youre working for a corp, yes youre overhead. You will always be dispensable and overhead because its in the company's best financial interests to replace you if a cheaper, more viable alternative were to be found.
Lol youve apparently never outsourced software to India before. Ive had to scrap and rebuild the codebase of every client I've worked with who has outsourced their development to India. The level of ****ty code they generate is mind-boggling.
Yep, this is the way to do it. And its just common sense too. As long as youre working for a corp, theyre always using you to build their asset. And as soon as something that works better for them comes along, they drop you. Its simple business. Nothing personal. You'd almost be stupid not to want to to build your own asset for yourself.
