Which mid-sized truck should I get in 2021?

Pretty much stuck between a Tacoma or a Colorado. I drive an old Dakota right now and this year the Dakota is coming back, so that’s also an option.
Totally digged the new army green Tacoma.

I think you will get more bang for your buck with the new Ranger or Colorado. Those Tacoma's are nice though, specially on resale. If I were you I would jump up too full size. Not much more $ and you get about twice the truck.

The Ranger would be better than the Colorado IMO. Trucks are holding value pretty well right now whether mid size or full. Can't really go wrong. Pick whichever you like driving most.

Was in the same spot, Tacoma, Colorado or canyon. The canyon felt better inside than the Colorado. Ended up with a Tacoma sport in army green and manual, had to go to Indiana to buy it though. Tacos have great resale which is why I also ended up going with the Tacoma.

Any particular reason you want a mid size?

The modern full size trucks have far more room, capability, power, amenities, etc for basically the same price.

I would get a 4 Runner / Jeep / Bronco way before I would get a mid size truck.

I see people say that they're the same price but I just haven't saw actual examples?

A new ranger xlt 4wd and 4 door will cost about 35 before tax.

A similar trim f150 4wd 4 door will be about 45-50 before tax.

An extra 10-15k for a full size is still a lot of money for most people.

Just chit posting because I love mine so much, but you could buy a 2011-2014 Raptor for the same price (30-35k) and it will depreciate less and is a much cooler truck than any new midsize truck

    Talking MSRP’s?

F150 XLT’s seem to always have pretty big discounts / incentives, where as I don’t see much at all on Ranger XLT’s.

Just a quick look on cars.com in my area is showing the difference as $5-10k, and in my opinion it is WELL worth it. Especially if financing 5-7 years.

There is a reason the ratio of folks who mid size truck up to full size dwarfs that of guys going full size to mid size.

If you genuinely need a truck, then the value and capability is in a full size truck.

If you think a mid size will generally fit your needs, then the vast majority of folks would be better served with with SUV’s like the 4Runner / Bronco / Wrangler.

Rebate time that f150 will go for 35k give or take
The ranger will go for 33/34k
Sales haven’t been as aggressive this year end as dealers dropped prices heavily when covid hit to move anything, at that time you could get a 4x crew cab f150 for 30 otd with 0% around here. I’d have traded in but was house shopping at the time.

Back when I bought my 17 z71 it was a similar story. Truck MSRP was 49k and I ended up at 36 before my trade in. Similar Colorado was 35k.
Ended up with a 2018 Pro4x Frontier later, and while it was a great little truck I was looking for another full-size within a year.

Only in resale value. In 2020 the Ranger or Canyon/Colorado are better options.

Toyota simply haven't updated their trucks in so long they've fell behind the curve. And reliability isn't what it used to be. There are tons of stories of people buying new Taco's and being quite disappointed in their purchase.

TBF the current Ranger is actually a 10 year old model on its 3rd face lift. The US just didn’t get it until 2019 but the rest of the world has had it for a while. Doesn’t mean it’s a bad truck but it is an old platform.

As far as midsize goes I would wait until next year, Honda is updating the Ridgeline so it doesn’t look like a minivan anymore, and We are finally getting the modern Nissan Frontier. Dodge is also bringing the Dakota back. Current Tacoma’s are probably the worst generation of Taco so far.

I get the want for a mid size over a full size. Current mid size trucks are the same size and capability of full size trucks two generations ago. The current ranger with the tow package can haul and tow more than the base level F-150 and it can actually haul more (but not tow) than a fully loaded limited edition.

I think we are getting to a weird inflection point where the full size pick ups unless fully loaded aren’t really worth it and if you really need massive towing and hauling you should look into a super duty level pick up. Full size trucks are just turning into flex machines. Fully loaded platinum F-150 is 75k and has more amenities than a mid size luxury sedan. Hell just an F-150 XL with the STX appearance package, the 2.7L TT so you can tow more than the ranger, and 4x4 (basically bare minimum) costs 4 grand more than a Lariat trim Ranger.

Tacoma no question. Off-road, 6’ bed is the best option. Add clazzio seats if you want leather. They are great. Check out tacomaworld forum.

The Nissan Frontier is new for 2021. So new it is supposed to start selling in spring and they still haven't revealed it.

I've been watching youtubes of the new ranger with the 2.3 turbo and it's really fast nd nimble. You should at least test drive one.

If I was to get a mid size, it would be the Ranger. And this is coming from someone who has owned two Tacomas, and currently owns a Tundra and TRD Pro 4Runner.

You can also get the Ford Factory Racing tune done straight from Ford that doesn’t void your warranty for less than $1000. Bumps it up to 320hp / 355tq.

That in a lariat FX4 / Tremor package would be a fun ride.
