I still dont see why we have a covid vaccine, but not for MERS, SARS, Ebola, AIDS, Flu etc. Each of those have "been around" longer and kill tons and tons.

-MERS is pretty rare and uncommon in the West so there's very little funding going into research for a vaccine

-For the same reason as MERS there is no SARS vaccine yet, but now that they were able to make a vaccine off of a "novel" strain of SARS i'm sure they're pretty close to one now.

-There is a vaccine for Ebola. It was approved by the FDA about a year ago...and again its also super rare in the west which is why there was no rush

and as for HIV, i'm just going to copy and paste what I wrote a few days ago when someone else brought up the same question;

HIV and covid are two completely different viruses with radically different life-cycles and mechanisms of proliferation.

-HIV replicates at a much faster pace than covid, To put things in perspective, viruses like covid and the flu mutate roughly once per year in a population, which is why we have a new vaccine for the flu every year. HIV mutates into a brand new strain from person to person....so every person that has HIV has their own personal strain of it.

HIV attacks CD4 cells making it impossible for our WBC's to track the virus in the body. CD4 cells are the type of white blood cells that tell you your body its in distress or being infected. Thats what it means to be immune compromised. Your body doesn't how know to (or has forgotten how to) fight off something as harmless as the common cold.

So unless you're rich like Magic Johnson and can afford 10+ years of research on your own strain of HIV, to find a cure for your SPECIFIC strain of the virus, you're out of luck.

The mRNA vaccine platform has a history going back to 1990 and the previous research is exactly why they were able to turn this thing around so quickly.
