Boyos, I'm surprised how many guys fall victim to this trick question.
If a hiring manager asks you this question, it's not because they're genuinely interested in getting to know you, it's actually because:
1) They already know they don't like you, so they ask you this question to provoke you to say something stupid and give them an excuse not to hire you
2) They want to see if you're at least smart enough NOT to answer this question honestly. If you were dumb enough to answer this question honestly, then you're too fccking stupid for this particular job.
If I answer honestly and say "Yeah, I'm into bodybuilding, firearms, Right Wing politics, motorcycles, boxing and btw I support Donald Trump...MAGA..." do you think they'll hire me? Nope.
The correct answer is "Well, I'm kind of a home body. I enjoy watching movies, going to the gym, spending time with friends....just simple stuff." <---- This is the politically correct answer. It's non-threatening and doesn't portray as a hyper-masculine meathead.
Remember, your objective is just to get the job, put in the bare minimum effort, collect your paycheck and GTFO......

lol nope. You gave a C answer. Doesnt move the needle, wont hurt you, wont help you.
You are right that bringing up politics or whatever makes you look like an idiot. You are wrong that hobbies is a 'trick' question. It's a way for you to be more memorable than a sheet of paper.
Say you are into rock climbing, sailing, car remodeling, etc. whatever as long as it's cool and you'll look good

Incorrect, I'm a finance manager, and HR specifically instructed me to ask this question to candidates that I feel "on the fence about" (this is their jargon)..... and they subtly hinted that I should only ask men this question.
We don't usually ask female candidates this question because we don't want to risk appearing intrusive..... funny how we-re encouraged to respect the privacy of women but not men

This.
I did have a company Zoom holiday party today (kms) where they asked for "one fun fact about your life outside of work!" I guess it's well-meaning enough just to give you a way to show you're not a STEM zombie, but A. most of us are STEM zombies, and B. for those workers who aren't, what they REALLY do outside of work is usually a little too degen to mention in polite company.FA Crew

zero chance this is true, especially since you are claiming to ask specific groups. A complete lawsuit in the making since there is no correct answer, and in fact you could claim you were qualified for the job and were discriminated against. I honestly cannot believe some of the sh*t I read on this forum. Stretch negged.

A male hiring manager is discouraged from asking this question to a female candidate.
How does a candidate prove discrimination based on a hobby? How does the candidate demonstrate in court that his hobby was what disqualified him from the job?
There are laws that prohibit discrimination based on race, gender, sexual orientation etc.... there are no laws that prohibits a company from hiring a person with a hobby that is deemed disruptive to the company culture...

In corporate america I cant say ive ever done that but I have just packed up my things and walked out of a customer facing meeting mid conversation with no words before. Just straight up got up and left. Would have been gangster if I turned the lights in the room off as I exited. LOL
