I was in a zoom interview this week for a new job and the interviewer asked me to introduce myself and say where I am from and something interesting about myself. Standard ice breakers. I pondered my response for a moment and thought I may as well say MMA because you don't hear that everyday.
Well I say my name, where I am from, and that I train mixed martial arts. I saw some people in the conference roll their eyes and make a slight grimace on their face, as though I said something I should not have. Even the one that asked the question made a snide joke by saying "well lets hope you can control yourself if we hire you." Then everyone else laughed like dikholes.
I don't see anything wrong with saying it. I wasn't bragging or trying to sound hard, just answering the question I was asked to answer. It pissed me off even more that they laughed at me for it WTF.

Is it frowned upon to say you train MMA? (job interview)

Have you been training for years?
Or are you just a ******* who does like kickboxing cardio classes with housewives?
You probably could have phrased it better.

It depends on how many wolves are on your t-shirt
Cheers"The manlet is a savage beast that knows no moral bound. After falling in disgrace to a manmore, a ravaged manlet would not hesitate to come from behind and land a sucker punch/ swing with a rock to the back of a manmore's head. They are ruthless and you need to spend some more time in the gutter to even begin trying to comprehend what goes on in their minds."

I think it depends on the company.
On the one hand having a passionate hobby is always a good thing.
On the other hand some people are pretty prejudiced about MMA fighters. You might have been talking to some beta corporate snobs, who look down on anyone not being a golfcuck and think you are lower class.
Last but not least they also have legit reasons to to be concerned about anyone doing extreme sports. After all you might miss work time due to injuries.

Why didn't you counter with a little humor? Are you autism?
"I can't be the only one here who likes to put on a robe and roll around on the ground after work."
"Play your cards right and I'll show you how to choke someone out."
"When you're 5'8", all you really have is MMA, big trucks, and Joe Rogan."
"I also knit dog themed sweaters for my friends and coworkers."

Obvious troll thread but IME most officecels are uninterested in combat sports and link an unhealthy obsession with MMA to street brawling, which is low class borderline criminal behaviour. Weekend mainstream team sports e.g. football/rugby/bb-ball etc. would be more normal.
That said, most officels also consider openly mocking an interviewee to be unprofessional. Whereas saying "I train MMA" might sound thuggish to a bunch of officels, it sounds cringe to gymcels, who are used to encountering clusters of preposterous MMA-tryhards polluting the workout environment. So we're back to why this is a troll thread."A stupid man's report of what a clever man says can never be accurate, because he unconsciously translates what he hears into something he can understand."

Should've said something like this OP. "I train MMA" sounds like you're an FA doing karate at home by yourself in front of the mirror. If you say
"I train MMA" you may as well say something like "I train Tai Chi." Sounds equally dumb. Not saying it is because it's not, but that's the impression people have.
Only thing worse is saying you're "really into Crossfit." People won't make fun of you, they'll just instantly hate you.

Sounds like a bunch of snobs who never had a real hard days work in their life. Pushing papers is EASY compared to manual labor. They don't understand the hard work and the effort it takes to train in MMA. Plus, they're intimidated by someone who could beat their asses. It's human nature for the weak to group up and try to knock down the strong. Wouldn't even sweat it, OP
