Becoming a personal banker?

Anyone here have experience in the financial industry? How is it like being a becoming a personal banker? Any tips/advice on how to advance your career as a banker?

I was a teller/personal banker since I was 16, now i work in IT within the finance industry. Personally my opinion on retail banking is it's a trap so you need an exit plan asap to get into the back office or other areas of consumer banking, once you go down the career advancement in retail to like branch manager or whatever you kind of end up reaching this middle manager level and won't get ever get experience to move into the more lucrative areas of banking.

it's good to learn some banking in the retail world but then get out of it into the more upward moving career paths within it, once you get a foothold you can make a good salary in other parts of banking.

Banks are becoming more digitized day by day and branch closures are becoming all too common , tread with caution.

I have a lot of experience in the banking industry but I've never done retail banking before. I know a couple of people who started off as personal bankers and ending up moving on to other things and doing fairly well. One became a private banker (which is similar to personal banking but for UHNW clients) and another became a financial advisor for a one of the big retail AM firms. Both are doing well. However I also know someone who was a personal banker and made horrible money and left the industry completely.

I had a friend who worked at Wells fargo right after college. He asked all our friends if we could open checking accounts to help him out.

Pretty much what everyone said is true. It's better than working at Wal Mart and the benefits are decent. You'll get goals that are just about impossible to meet in order to get commissions (which are usually given quarterly). Shit rolls downhill fast, too.
