    Agree with above.

Starting to look around for something new myself. Been a GM/Chevy driver since 1995. Almost bought a Tundra in 2015, but the dealership didn't want to play ball, so I walked next door to the GM dealership and bought a Sierra. Currently have 97k miles on it. Not one thing wrong with it in the 5+ years I've owned it.

The problem right now is that there is no inventory around to even go look at or test drive. I'd like to test drive the 3.0 duramax to see what it is about, but will probably end up getting the 6.2L. Like the TrailBoss looks a lot, but not much out there around here to go test drive.
You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.

Covid has been a mfer for newer trucks. The model year clearances this year didn’t compare to previous years because the majority of their inventory was gone.

You can't go wrong with the 5.7 reliability. Its a gas guzzler but will get you anywhere. What threw me off about them is they are over price and the technology just isn't there. I also didn't like the seats and how you sit in them. This is when I looked a year ago. I went with a F150 because it was way cheaper, love the seats and the technology is awesome. I like V8's so got a 5.0 which should be bomber for a long time. What I don't like is that 10 speed tranny. So far so good but worry about longevity of it. I love sport mode, crazy fast.

You can't go wrong with any of the major brands. For the Tundra I feel like you are buying the name more so than anything else.

So I am in no way unbiased, but I have gotten to that point thru probably half a million totally trouble free miles over decades of my own experience to go with the tons of real world objective data.....

If you are looking for a truck to keep for a couple decades, then there is no question. Get the Tundra.

    The good:
Since the 2nd Gen came out in 07 there hasn’t been any real changes to the truck. Motor / transmission / suspension / brakes / etc. Only real changes have been cosmetic exterior / interior. This equates to unrivaled reliability. Here is a recent article about the tear down of one of the several million mile tundras out there.

    https://www.motortrend.com/news/mill...the-tear-down/

Get the 5.7L motor since there really isn’t any mpg benefit in the 4.6/4.7. The 5.7L is anvil reliable. Power is 380hp/400tq, so still competitive with today’s motors. Mpg is 14/17, so not great, but not brutal either.

6 speed transmission is very stout for towing and shifts well, but is also comes at the expense of some mpg compared to the new domestic 8 and 10 speeds. But can also go 1M miles stock.

Crewmax cab is massive, and very comfortable. Full roll down rear window is such a cool feature.

Tons of quality aftermarket for the trucks to upgrade suspension for off-road or whatever needs you have.

Check out Tundras.com as a great resource. You’ll also see where there isn’t the typical threads about problems. Just a bunch of threads of guys upgrading and building up there trucks. Great community.

    The bad:
Towing is decent, but payload is a bit low compared to more modern trucks. Guys totally overload them with no issues, but payload Is also easily fixed aftermarket too.

MPG is not great at 14 city / 17 Hwy. Tows well tho with its gearing, and nets typical half ton numbers.

Toyota is notoriously Spartan when it comes to their interiors and interior features. Will have everything you need tho, just not the extra bells and whistles. Everything will work and look basically new for the life of the truck tho.

In closing, for a truck you plan on keeping for decades there really isn’t any other option. Find any 2007 - current Tundra that you are comfortable with the miles and service history, build it up to fit your wants / needs, and enjoy it for a long time.

Oh, also..... New fully redesigned Tundra is going to be introduced spring / summer 2021 as a 2022 model. Going to a twin turbo V6, and dropping the legendary 5.7.

I will be keeping my 18 Platinum for a while to see how the new Tundra does after a few years. Hoping they come with a game changer like they did with the 2007, instead of like what they did with the redesigned Tacoma and the motor / transmission debacle guy are dealing with.
This really sums it up good.

American trucks are great work trucks, with shorter life span. Toyota trucks are good work trucks, with long lifespan.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit softly.

While Tundra is the least capable full size pick up you really can't go wrong as far as reliability is concerned with full size trucks.

It pretty sad that the current generation Tundra came out in 2007 because the F-150 has been through 4 different generations since then.

    I have a 2nd gen Tacoma and I'm considering trading it for a F-150 with 3.5L ecoboost.

I too wish they would accelerate they build cycles, but Toyota is very Japanese in their philosophy. Rather than risk putting out a product that possibly doesn’t meet their standards, they would rather refine their existing product to make it better. They simply won’t rush anything out. They are the same way with the 4Runner that hasn’t changed since 2010.

Then look at all the issues (relative to Toyota) the 3rd Gen Tacoma is going through with the new motor and transmission.

Can’t blame you for going with a full size (the eco boost are great trucks), I would just suggest waiting a couple more months to see what the redesigned Tundra comes up with. The 2nd Gen in 07 truly was a step ahead of everything else. With the great products that the Big 3 are putting out, who knows, maybe Toyota will pull a 2007 again and blow everyone’s doors off.

I am sure you will still get great money for your 2nd Gen Tacoma. My 2020 Pro 4Runner has that same motor and transmission, solid for sure.

TUNDRA have weak frames. They do horrible is a crash. They are not worth it. Plus they are gas hogs!!! No longer the best truck. F-150 is the best no comparison any more. Toyota has like 3% of the truck market for a reason. They are over rated.

Toyota gives you last decades truck at todays (or higher) prices. literally every other midsize truck has a better engine, better transmission, nicer interior, better infotainment, ext ext ext. They dont even have rear disc breaks! This year they made BIG deal about adding POWER SEATS to the taco. imagine buying a $45,000+ TRD pro with no power seats. GTFO.
I had a 2016 4runner for my company car, i liked a lot of things about it, id have another one as a weekend toy. Great off road, i like the roll down back glass for the dogs to look out. But it was OLD feeling, that was part of its charm actually. it was like driving a brand new classic car. terrible gas mileage, the engine was loud and trashy and SLOW(compared to modern cars). Its the only car ive had any issue with the last 10 years, my infotainment would freak out all the time and reset it self.
one of my cars is currently a 2020 Camry xle (company car) and its fine. So, I am not anti toyota, i just think for the money you can get a lot nicer truck at this point. dont buy into the reliability crap the fan boys preach. ALL new cars are reliable. there tons more domestics out there with 2-3-400,000 miles as there are toyotas. go search older stuff. youll see.

I’d get a Silverado or a Nissan Titan.

I think I've decided on a Silverado. I want to get the 5.3 because those things are legendarily indestructible.

They redesigned the 5.3 with the new Gen Silverado, and thank god got rid of AFM. The 5.3 BEFORE AFM is indeed legendary for reliability.

The last Gen 5.3 (2014-2019) with AFM is legendary for collapsed lifters which lead to the top half of the motor eating itself from the inside. Happened to me on my 2017 Tahoe work rig with less than 60k miles.

Be sure to do a Google search on AFM collapsed lifters. Huge issue, but can be fixed when AFM delete, but that also ironically will void your warranty.

So I should look at finding a 2013 and older 5.3 then? I won't mind finding an older/cheaper truck as long as it doesn't need too much work done to it.

2nd Gen Silverado / Sierras are 2007 - 2014. I prefer the Sierras front end MUCH more than the Silverado, and the body lines of the 2nd gens are my favorite.

But if you are looking at 2007-2013 trucks, then the Tundra is a MUUUUUUUCH better truck with a much more powerful and reliable motor / trans / overall package.

This forum is filled with idiots.

Toyota is a conservative company who puts alot of money into R/D. I MEAN ALOT OF MONEY. The 5.7 they use is basically the same since 07 and that engine has been refined over the years but its top notch A1 reliable bulletproof.

Gladiator soft top is a game changer you like doing outdoor stuff. You can have the whole top off in 5 minutes and it stores under a lockable bed cover. Doors come off pretty easy as well and then it's a blast on the trails.

Unless you have a need to tow over 8,000 lb there's really nothing else worth considering. And I've been a Chrysler Fiat hater for years.

ALL new cars are reliable. there tons more domestics out there with 2-3-400,000 miles as there are toyotas. go search older stuff. youll see.
My favorite is the used Tacoma prices LOL
