Keanu Reeves' Johnny Silverhand adds dimension to nearly every quest, forcing you to rethink your decision-making instincts

The Bad
There's so much to do that isn't meaningful, so a lot of it ends up feeling superfluous
Superficial and often "edgy" aesthetic choices often have no real purpose, which makes them grating rather than adding anything relevant to the world
The incorporation of different cultures and backgrounds is wildly inconsistent, from good to inaccurate to downright offensive
The main story doesn't cohere with the rest of the game, with an urgency that's at odds with everything else
Technical issues, from visual bugs to full-on crashes, are so pervasive that it's impossible to ignore

Automatically invalidates the review. You can't knock fiction for "inaccurate" takes on cultures and backgrounds. Unless I'm mistaken, the game isn't a historically accurate depiction of the world and it literally can't be given it's futuristic timeline and world setting. It might draw inspiration from, but without any other context means it's accurate from the fiction in the game. No need to even to comment on the offensive bit, outrage culture has pretty much summed that up.


Edit: That being said. That pretty much puts the game at a 9/10 with the final point being bugs, which is expected with the scope of the game.

So yeah, confirmed, Cyberpunk 2077 is 10/10

Can't possibly take any review that seriously unless they have played this game for 200+ hours. Personally I think this game is going to score lower with most people than they'd have hoped, but we'll see.

The sheer amount of bugs unrelated to performance that I saw in leaked gameplay makes that point understandable. There's funny **** like bouncing off ledges or enemies flying up in the air but also **** that ruins the game a bit like enemies not detecting you when you're in front of them, going through objects that should be solid and dialogues not triggering. In ~5 hours of gameplay I saw there were about 3 random crashes too.

I don't see what's wrong with criticizing portrayal of cultures. The game is not exactly meant to be a sociological thesis so it's not something I would put much weight on if a sufficiently good job was done (which I think CDPR did, given leaks) but it's fair enough to point out shortcomings. Yes, gaming media likes to whine about that sort of thing but it doesn't mean any criticism in this area is invalid.

And I also think they have a point with the main story emphasizing urgency but the game is clearly built to time sink across town, although saying anymore about this would be heavy on the spoiler side. It's mostly a narrative problem.


But overall bugs are by far the the biggest problem I saw. Without Day 1 patch this game just can't be 9+/10 out of the gate. Hopefully they put in serious work over the past 21 days and I'm sure it'll eventually be smooth enough to get to GOAT status. But CDPR should be kicking themselves that yet again they hit release with so much **** to fix still.

Deacon is a biker and Sarah is a "nice girl" scientist, which is fine, but "opposites attract" isn't enough to make their relationship compelling. It's romantic in that Deacon hasn't given up on Sarah, but the main takeaway from the flashbacks is that they're physically attracted to each other and that Deacon doesn't talk about his feelings.

I spent a lot of my playtime following side-quest threads like this one, excited about the premise and hoping to find something as interesting or fun or rewarding at the end and, in many cases, I did. But now, after finishing the main story, I can't see how most of those activities fit into the overall narrative or the character I was playing. The main story doesn't even gel with itself.

Aside from character highlights, side quests are far and away the best part of the game. Like the rogue taxi one I mentioned at the beginning of this review, there are quite a few clever, interesting, goofy, and sad side quests that I really enjoyed.

In fact, most nice things in Night City are prohibitively expensive, and I found that money was often the only obstacle when it came to progression. Granted, I was playing Cyberpunk on a tight deadline, so I couldn't spend much time doing odd jobs. But there is a ridiculous amount of stuff to buy and seemingly endless moneymaking jobs to take on. There's even a whole section in your quest journal dedicated to all the cars people have offered to sell you--though you start the game with a car, and I got multiple free vehicles for completing side quests, so I never bought a car and couldn't find a real reason to.

There's so much to cover that I can't possibly touch on everything, but my experience is that there are aspects of the game that feel lost in translation, invoking cultures that aren't adequately explored or contextualized. Characters in one side quest use the word "ofrenda" as if it means "funeral" when it's actually a particular kind of altar primarily for Day of the Dead--it's unclear to me if this is a translation issue or an overall misunderstanding of Mexican customs, since you do put together an altar during the event that's being called "the ofrenda." As another example, you can go to a clothing store in Japantown and buy "yukata" that are just wrap shirts bearing only the slightest resemblance to real yukata. It's not that Cyberpunk always gets everything wrong in its incorporation of a variety of cultures and backgrounds but that the world is so big and unruly that I never knew what I would find around any corner or understand what the intent behind it was--I just grew to accept that whatever I did find, at least in terms of setting and worldbuilding, would likely be superficial.
