Is Buying an Older, Out-of-Warranty German Performance Car Impractical?

Many like these cars because of the V8 engine, exhaust note, etc.

Let's say they have ~60k miles on them. Are they impractical to buy, ticking time bombs? Would you just opt for a new one instead? What kind of warranties can you buy?

I know a guy who buys salvage title audis at auction dirt cheap, fixes them up and drives them for a few years and flips them. He does it for fun. He looks for specific type of collision/damage that he fixes for fun.

So sure it is doable, it just depends how much time you want to put into it. For him fixing broken ones is a hobby. My opinion is that even if youre looking for a fully working one, you should spend time reading up on the common issues for that particular model and generation before you buy it and have it looked over by a mechanic. I wouldnt blindly buy a 2014 BMW M5 for example, I would spend time on BMW forums and understand what the most common maintenance issues are, the most common failures ect. Then if that is what you want then go for it.

it wouldn't be fair to call them ticking time bombs and IMO the shape a car is in by 60k miles is very dependent on the previous owner. however, and we just had another post like this earlier in the week, i still see the used beemers and benz as a trap because even the general maintenance jobs cost so much more than domestic or Japanese rides.

i think what happens is....maintenance is very expensive. previous owner doesn't shell out the dollars to properly maintain. car ages poorly. then you swoop in and buy it.

it's a matter of education. don't think you're getting a steal of a deal on an M5 that has high mileage. factor in what it costs to maintain or repair. don't be one of those bros who gets sticker shock when they bring the car in for an electrical issue. don't buy a warranty on a used vehicle either that whole thing is a rip.

If you can wrench, go for it. If not, expect about 2k/year on maintenance repairs.

They are way more reliable than they used to be.

My 2014 RS7 is closing in on 70,000 miles (almost all of them with a tune and mods) and I have had literally 0 issues.

My 2005 A6 4.2 Prestige didn't make it to 50,000 without issues and it was stock.

They don't have any warranties, brah.

I would never buy from a used car dealership, only certified preowned from the brand dealerships. Used car dealerships make a killing on profits but their cars history and maintenance are iffy.

But if you really like it, try to get it for a good price. These are fun cars where you abuse them so they won't last as long.

I drove an old BMW V8 for a while. Too much going on to keep it, for me.

I would only do so if you're buying a legendary model, a luxury merc or something. No 120,000 mi. Audi.

Yes. You smooth brained? Srs. It's gonna be a lifetime of headaches. Had a coworker bought a beemer that he hated so much that he was considering crashing it on purpose into my other co-worker's Tundra (which insurance screwed him over on after accident) just to get rid of it.

    If you're buying old, nope

I had an E Class Benz just over 3 years old with a 5 year warranty package; steering column chit itself. $5500 repair job, and the dealer tried to argue that it was an out of warranty problem. Convinced them otherwise, then decided to fuk the thing off before its warranty was up.

I like the Benz cars; looking at possibly getting into the new A45 AMG S, or getting an A35 AMG and buying a project now to muck around with and try to build something loud and fast.

Either Benz will be brand new or an ex-demo, which puts around 2000km on the clock prior to sale. Never buying another Euro car without full warranty coverage for the time I'm prepared to keep it.

I dont think it's bad if you do the right research and are mechanically inclined.

I got a 2004 cayenne turbo and nothing has happened that I'd didn't expect given the model and year. I also do my own maintenance so I save on that end.

In regards to BMW I would only buy 2016+ model and ONLY with a B58 engine. The B58 engine is actually a dependable motor compared to the older BMW turbo engines.

B58 is an awesome engine... too bad they don’t have an engine as solid as it but with 8 cylinders

Mercedes builds the most reliable European cars. You can't go wrong with an AMG, bullet proof V8 engines that can take abuse. The W204 C63 you posted is reliable. There's a couple issues you want to deal with, head over to the forums. After that though, you're good to go.

Stay away from BMW. Nothing good about their cars. Audi is sketchy as their turbos can go meaning an $8k repair.

Stay away from BMW. Nothing good about their cars. Audi is sketchy as their turbos can go meaning an $8k repair.

They’re cheap for a reason. The maintenance and repairs cost a ton and you have to figure that in when buying one.
If you don't get what you want you didn't want it bad enough

If you can't buy it with a warranty, you can't afford it.
