LOL! I have a couple teenagers I'm coaching pro bono right now too - all good - I love helping people out. Don't want to neglect my family but I think the balance is ok for now.

Good to see everyone still at it. Less and less of us lately.

I am still in the grind. Nothing exciting but made a push last few weeks trying to eat even less on my 3 days with 20+ hour fasts. It is working. Not fun, but working.

Dont know what my weight is. Dont want to step on scale, but my guess from knowing where I have been in the past is 202-203 area.

Good work keep at it ID!

Monday's squat day was again solid. I didn't go up in weight, but did go up in reps (4x4 @ 441); still moving very very well! Been a little while, so I added a heavy unrack to my day and put on all my big plates and it didn't feel too bad (683 lbs, held for about 5 sec)!
Will be about 3 weeks for my new Inzer sleeves due to production issues - wanting to get them broken in soon!

    Indeed.

Had a good bench day yesterday. Main set was pause bench quads. First set did 286 to be sure I was good, then jumped to 2 sets at 297 which is just 6lbs off last weeks fun 4x303, but with pauses. Felt like I hit all the components well - in particular had a good brace on all reps.

Looking for something different tonight I did something I have not done in 4 or 5 years+. BFR training. I forgot how much this sh!t hurts

I think I am going to bring it back into rotation a little. Allows me to use less weight and really abuse my legs. I only do 1-2 sets at end of workout.

For real. It was a life saver when I was having some prolonged elbow issues. Allowed me to continue training and simultaneously rehabilitate my arm. Great tool.

LOL thanks brotha! I had to work so my wife and I just went to dinner once I finished at the gym.

My wife had a surprise birthday party for me this Sat where she invited A LOT of people! However she didn't know I had a contractor coming this weekend to put siding on the side and back of my house

Anyway she had to reschedule for next weekend, I felt so bad for her.

Yesterday's deadlift workout was one of the better ones in a month or so.... the last few weeks have been very stressful and I've been low in energy by the end of the week. Felt pretty good going in which was a good thing - my program had me attempting 3x2 @ 500 - which I did - and it actually felt pretty easy My second pull was better on every set - I think on the first rep I'm in my head too much particularly with the slack pull which I'm still working on. In any case, 6 total deads over 500 feels great!

Yesterday hit another rep PR with 2 doubles at 485, which is the current tested IPL WR at my age/weight - oddly enough the national records in USPA are all higher (many more qualifying meets), but I'm feeling good about breaking both at my next meet in November!
Did some narrow squats after to get that good quad burn

@BH. Happy birthday brother! Man, I just want a few sips out of the fountain of youth you are drinking out of. Great work as always!

PHD...deads look good! If I could make a suggestion (but remind you I am not a sumo expert, but I think the advice applies).

I think a lot of us want to have our hips WAY down, thinking we are going to generate more leg drive. BUT putting them initially any lower than were you actually pull from, breaks your form RIGHT FROM THE START, causing you to have to pull the back in and lever the weight. EG, inefficient.

If you look at your vid, both times, you set your hips low, then begin the pull and BOTH times your hips raise first to your real hip engagement point. You then have to lever to pull the weight back in.

So I am suggesting letting your hips start higher. There should be no hip raise on start of pull. ANY raising of the hips will cause some degree of bar being away from your shins (because it has not broke ground yet and is not simply a pendulum at this point).

I had to work very hard to fix this and you should start now. IT WILL be your limiting factor as you get stronger. It is HARD to fix once you are programmed so start now.

I ideally, on a efficient pull, you start your hips right at the pulling point.

I tried to find a vid where I could show you good to bad on me pulling. When I did multiple rep sets, I was always working to get my start point right. You can see on this set of 5, my first pull SUCKS but they get better and more efficient every rep. (that is what I was working for). 4 was really good and my last rep (which you would think form would break down the most) was actually my best and most efficient.

    I see it and agree.

Your also using straps allowing double overhand grip, changing that to mixed grip in a meet changes form and setup too, at least for me. It’s even harder to start higher with mixed grip.

Good pulls ID and always appreciate feedback. I've been focusing on slack pull lately which has thrown off the rest of my form a fair bit. I'm still not happy with my slack pull either. I REALLY like the dynamic start of raising my hips, but when I bring my hips back down I lose the slack pull. I'll keep working on that part. I think you are right about hips... but it's tricky. I know that when I drop low to me it feels smoother to engage the lever of raising the bar, but I note on ally my single heavy lifts (PRs) I don't drop my hips as much. You are probably right I can lift from a slightly higher hip position. I'll work on that - but still my focus for this cycle is slack pull... ugh.

I really wish I could make a hook grip work for me. I love the positioning of double OH and how the bar sits lower at the start... my hands are just too fat and fingers just too short

All right ok, so, last night was another really nice bench day.
Hit a couple 364 singles in a slingshot which was really easy but good for CNS to have that weight.
Then hit 2 doubles at 315 which felt really easy and nice to see that weight moving.... not sure I can hit my goal of 340 by November but feeling it might be in reach.

I'll work on that - but still my focus for this cycle is slack pull... ugh.
That is a long time ago! I looked for a vid where my form went from Bad to good as the set went on. That is how I fixed my issue. I pretty much recorded every working set and then evaluated.

Deficit pulls also help your hips engage early. Try a 2" and see how your initial pull looks. BUT, I dont know how any of this translates to SUMO. But I do know that any hip rise, and corresponding lowering of torso to compensate, is BAD. It is throwing off your mechanics right from the start.

I was stuck pretty much forever until I fixed this. I did not think I would ever pull 6 plates. Then I fixed it and over just 3 months of form tweaks, I added almost another 50lbs to my deads.

Sadly no more heavy lifting for me. I am slowly eating less and less and just doing the same workouts. I think I might be shedding a little too much mass, but I am going to just keep going. Skinfolds are getting very thin. I have always stopped short of getting in good shape because I was too weak mentally. But I drew a line in the sand this year. It is only willpower that stops this. Happy to say I am ALMOST where I would like to be.

    Seriously looking good!
I do quite a lot of deficit pulls - probably the second most common after regular deads sumo. I also pull conventional on almost every warmup and backdown, and conventional pauses. I'll just watch a bunch of my videos and see where that hip engagement is and try to start the lift there instead of lower. I agree, when I see my shoulders drop that's a big ouch on form and effort.

@ID/Supra whomever - still not real happy with form - of course when you go heavy it's hard to have 'perfect' form.
Here are three heavy singles I did last night at 535. Felt harder than I thought they should have, but it's only 20lbs off my PR so maybe I'm being hard on myself (except I'm aiming for 580 in November).
At any rate my slack pull sucked, I did try hips higher, but dropping/opening my hips feels better... just not sure where I'm at with my deadlift form.

Your numbers are unthinkable for me.
Your torso was nice and upright and you stood up with the weight.
I couldn't tell if the initiation of the movement was from the ass moving backwards, though.

    What is BFR training?
