I think that's pretty much a generic truism. I don't think there has ever been a time and place that was great for everyone, at least not during written history.

Except in the haze of nostalgia, when all of us oldies start to draw comparisons about how great the old days were compared with the present day.

Most of those old "Life was great" retellings are highly fictionalized, as befits our old, faulty, and highly selective geriatric recollections.

As I said, I had some good times, but I was never unaware of the real evils that were always there on the outskirts for me, and all too real for others that I knew. And some of those who embraced the evils of the day are the same folks who later went on to bemoan the loss of the wonderful life it had been back then.

For this reason, I get a bit of a bitter taste in my mouth whenever somebody talks about how good things used to be. It's mostly survivor bias, and has little to do with reality. I look at these charming pictures of people riding around without helmets or seat belts and immediately recall all the close friends I lost who would still be here today if helmets and seat belts had been a thing then. And those friends would probably be talking about "the good old days" themselves.

And that's just scratching the surface. I lived at the tail end of the Jim Crow era in one of the most Jim Crow regions of the south, and the institutional hatred and repression was pervasive, and didn't just damage the black segment of the population.

I was 8 years old when I watched Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream" speech, and later I got to see how my white friends reacted to it. It wasn't pretty, even for my youthful naivete.

ha well no wonder you miss the "Good Ol' Days"

Very interesting reading, Kaz. The Ventures were phenomenal and very talented musicians. They loved playing to their Japanese fan base. There is only one surviving band member left. And Gerry McGee died on October 12, 2019, after collapsing onstage four days earlier in Japan. He was 81.

I searched "Group Sounds" and ended up watching "The Spiders" on youtube. You guys rock and I'm sure your parents hated what was happening to music in Japan lol
