If your mortgage or rent exceeds 25% of your monthly take home pay, it's too expensive. Simple as that. The higher that percentage is, the less you can save/invest/pay-debts with. And the longer it'll take to retire.

Was in the home buying process when I last got promoted. Our mortgage (base+ins+escrow) is currently 13% of our combined net income each month. We're actually looking at buying another home in the area as an income property.

JFL, our mortgage/taxes/insurance on an 1850' 3/2 brick home is barely over one week's take home pay, and that's not counting my wife's income. Citycels, when will they learn?
