The system's bottom DDR6 memory module has insufficient cooling, it is not in contact with the heatsink, and hits critical temps of 93.3 °C (199.94 °F) in a room with an ******t temperature of around 23 °C (73.4 °F). This is why people's PS5's are crashing and losing data.
The top memory module that is in contact with the heatsink only reaches temps of around 65.5 °C (149.9 °F).
This dude's finger is on top of the lower memory module that's overheating. The top memory module is to the left of his finger under the big heatsink.
Looks like a big fuk up, and there's going to be a lot of angry people next summer as ******t temps rise.
Sucks major balls for ps5 owners, good luck with yours if you have one!

The launch day PS-5 has a design failure.
I'm to old for this chit.

Did some Googling and couldn't find anything on this. You got a link chief? I don't own a PS5 but it would be surprising if the engineers overlooked this issue.

The launch day PS4's had their own design failures, foremost being the touch sensitive buttons they used for power and eject. The eject was prone to malfunctioning where it would keep trying to eject the disc all the time. That and it made it a pain in the ass to clean the console, just grazing them would cause the console to power on or eject. I ended up disabling the eject button on mine when I took it apart to clean it because it kept trying to eject. They ended up switching them to physical buttons you gotta press so Sony knew it was a bad move.

I don't know how legitimate this is. And I've seen a couple articles of temps of the components that mention the memory runs hot but within an acceptable range.
With that said my PS5 has crashed about a dozen times. LoL ... My issues have been pretty random and it seems people online have very random issues as well in different situations so it doesn't make much sense it's tied to memory temps. If I had to guess the software was just rushed and not working properly. Rest mode is completely fawked and the system decides when it will put itself in rest mode even if you tell it to never use rest mode so there are issues with the OS that can hopefully be patched soon.

I watched the video a couple days ago. Cliffs:
- PS5 cooling isn't very adequate for the memory.
- A lot of the cooling system is really poorly thought out.
- The fan does a poor job of exhausting heat out the chassis and the chassis retains a lot of heat inside.
The hottest memory is technically still within acceptable range - but it's way higher than you'd ideally like it to be.

Hopefully not going to manifest into something really bad down the road. I've also been seeing reports of GPU artifacts from heat issues. I wonder if the frequency controller that controls cpu/gpu clocks (AMD smartshift) could be a culprit. Could also be limited to a bad batch but issues it seems are popping up in different regions. Overall, I'm glad I'm waiting out the PS5 for now with all these reports popping up.

I mean waiting to see if there are issues doesn't make much sense. There are issues. If they are widespread enough they will be fixed. Just like the red ring was. I went through 3-5 Xbox360s that first year or two then they changed designed and I had the same one for the rest of the generation.
I wouldn't go as far as to say massive at this point. Failure rate of PS4 at launch was 1%. People are estimating PD5 sales thus far somewhere in the millions and if 1% of those people are complaining then it seems bad with the power of the internet, while 99% of people will be just fine.
Not trying to downplay it. I have had multiple crashes and get scared AF I will be a victim each time. And it may be a widespread red ring issue but we don't have the data to claim that yet.

I think I went through 2 Xbox 360's due to the red ring ... Third one was the charm.
Still inexcusable though, this many widespread issues at launch esp in 2020, when you think that these companies have an idea of issues/problems electronics face .... Inexcusable.
On that note, it's time to stop giving these companies excuses with the whole "launch console" "problems" ..... It's 2020, mobile phones are doing this with no issues at all, and I'm sure many other electronic systems have better quality at launch.Sig line can't be a novel

If this were true all the video gaming news sites would be running with it. Anything PS5 or XSX gets you thousands of views so they would not hesitate to get that sweet ad money

So basically similar thing as the PS4?
Anyway, my PS5 has crashed about 15 times in total while playing Godfall for the last week. It has also crashed without playing, i.e database rebuild twice.
Disappointing to be honest. It also makes some noise, but it might be from the sticker inside, which one can remove after opening the panels on the side. Have not tried yet.
The console is really fast though, I do enjoy that.

At this point, I feel like it's a hardware issue that can be obviated by software - really firmware if we're getting technical (software stored on the hardware for it to run) because of how the PS5 uses a cooling algorithm, as per Cerny's original tech breakdown from the summer:
"We don't use the actual temperature of the die, as that would cause two types of variance between PS5s," explains Mark Cerny. " One is variance caused by differences in ******t temperature; the console could be in a hotter or cooler location in the room. The other is variance caused by the individual custom chip in the console, some chips run hotter and some chips run cooler. So instead of using the temperature of the die, we use an algorithm in which the frequency depends on CPU and GPU activity information. That keeps behaviour between PS5s consistent."
Inside the processor is a power control unit, constantly measuring the activity of the CPU, the GPU and the memory interface, assessing the nature of the tasks they are undertaking. Rather than judging power draw based on the nature of your specific PS5 processor, a more general 'model SoC' is used instead. Think of it as a simulation of how the processor is likely to behave, and that same simulation is used at the heart of the power monitor within every PlayStation 5, ensuring consistency in every unit.
"The behaviour of all PS5s is the same," says Cerny. "If you play the same game and go to the same location in the game, it doesn't matter which custom chip you have and what its transistors are like. It doesn't matter if you put it in your stereo cabinet or your refrigerator, your PS5 will get the same frequencies for CPU and GPU as any other PS5."
Let's say that for the average chip, as in what most people have in their PS5, that algorithmic cooling works within the margins of Sony's testing. It's any chips that do run hotter where those margins begin to show cracks, and depending on the percent of chips that are at risk will then be the most prone to that algorithm failing their individual performance.
My take is that they should have had a fail safe parameter based on individual unit performance at the very minimum, because the honest truth is that no matter how fine tuned the algorithmic cooling is over time, it simply will not be adequate for all PS5s as the number of variables increases, while definitely not being granular enough to account for the less efficient chips in the wild. Launch models could foreseeably run different than a new batch over time skewing the algorithm, so how does Sony apply the algorithm to account for the rising number of variance?
While I understand the desire for consistency, prioritizing it over assured individual system performance was and still is a point of personal concern that frankly exceeds any worries over general cooling design.
I learned through personal experience with my PC how important it is to monitor your device's performance because an algorithm won't be able to adjust for games that run the machine hotter by stressing the machine differently.
Hopefully Sony will be able to add a more individualized layer to their algorithmic cooling to act as a safeguard for external variables.
