Vintage Jackson Plate Set

So to start off, i have no idea where to put this thread, so I guess I'll start here.

I was gifted a load of weights,a couple years back, by a neighbor of mine who was months from passing away. I loaded the weight, moved it to the house, stored in a shed.

Fast forward to today, I take everything out to downsize a bit, start posting these weights, within 10 minutes mine and my wife's phones are EXPLODING. Do a bit of research and come to find the guy had an entire collection of vintage weights, York, pacific, paramount, champion and(apparently) the holy grail of vintage weights, Jackson.

So, now, here i am with a full set of Jackson plates ranging from 1 1/4lb up to 50lb, totaling about 354 lbs, without any idea how to value them or where to go to have them checked out. All I've gathered from the scattered pieces of Jackson weights that I've managed to find online is that they are being sold for $9 per lb(id say average, but I could only find 2 other people that had any of them)

So, my question is, does anyone have any clue where I should go to figure this out or who to take them to?

EDIT: Below is a "link" to the pictures, wouldn't let me post the full link together because I haven't made 50 posts yet, apologies.

Trust no one, when it comes to vintage weights you'll likely get a TON of emails/messages from 'Collectors' telling you what they are worth (heavy sarcasm). If you are looking to sell them your best bet towards getting a fair price is to let the market decide, keep an eye on eBay over the next few months and look for comparable auctions and what they ended at. Then set your reserve prices at a reasonable amount and let the bidding war begin. Long story short it's difficult to price these things because they are rare niche items, at the end of the day they are only worth what someone is willing to pay....

Yeah unfortunately it doesn't really work like that, especially with weights. You can look Worthpoint and completed eBay auctions for similar plates that have sold (I wouldn't look at the highly inflated asking price of active auctions) and try to gauge off that and sell them similarly. A lot of these sellers can have these things listed for extremely long periods of time hoping for someone to bite at a really high price. So it also depends on how you value money now versus money later. For these weights of yours specifically, not all Jacksons are equal -- they're not as valuable as the earlier different 2 inch models like the 1-A. And not all plate sizes fetch the same amount per pound. A pair of 1-A 5 lb plates will fetch a much larger price than a pair of #4 1 1/2 5 lbs plates. A pair of 1-A 45s are going to fetch the most. A pair of 50s at 1 1/2 are going to get much less even though they weigh more. With Jacksons especially, there are so many variations and close to no info online. A lot of people just list them and hope for the best, or they're trading with our collectors behind the scenes.

You have a couple of solutions, the obvious one is:

1. Keep them, clean 'em up, and post pictures here frequently

But depending on how much you like money, you could also:

2. Sell to a friend or family member that will use them and cherish 'em (least money)
3. Sell to a close collector that you like and trust, who won't just flip 'em a year later for profit (little more money)
4. Sell it on eBay. Highest Bidder. F*** the iron, cash is king. (most money, aka Matrix route)

You need a good rack, a bench, and a 300-lb Olympic weight set. Now, what was your question?

+1. I got a TON of messages from "longtime collectors" re the York deep dish telling me how they saw the same ones sell for $x the week before, etc. A few of them got really hostile when I declined. Ultimately, I just let them sit for several weeks to see where the offers took me. I'm a patient guy when it comes to these things though. Once I have a good idea of what the market value is, I'll wait as long as I need to get in that ballpark.

Uploading photos on mobile isn't all that bad, just create an Imgur account and upload them there, then copy and past the forum image link here. You'll have to add at the end of the web link.

Seems that the smaller, unmarked plates that I have so many of are york, not sure if someone can confirm or not.

Looks like they're Jackson #4. Nice set of plates.

These Pacific dumbbells are cool.

Aesthetically, I really like the Jackson 50 lb. Not a collector and would never be able to pay what they are worth, but just look like something cool to have in my home gym. Thanks for the pics!

If you’re on Facebook there is a vintage York collectors group. They can help.

You don't need to do that. Just remove the WWW and everything before. That creates needless extra work for other people to go in and remove the spaces, whereas this way you can just copy, paste, and hit go.

Curious if cleaning the rust off the plates will somehow devalue them?

No. Citric acid powder or vinegar. Wire wheel if necessary. Don't paint them. Let the end user make that decision.

This exactly. Light rust, just leave it. Patina is desirable to some.
