Just spent 10 days down there somewhere outside San Juan. We stayed in a gated community in this outrageously large house, 3 minutes from the super walmart. Everything was closed cause of covid, and we mostly just got yucky. Easily the worst vacation I've ever been on. But a break from work is a break from work.
My favorite place

Lol, you're doing it wrong. I never understand why people travel to remote locations and rent a big house away from any activity.
Guaranteed there's tons to do in Old San Juan area right now, but you traveled like a boomer and stayed somewhere 30 minutes away in some secluded area and only socialized with people you came with. This is the absolute worst way to travel. I often travel solo, and I have 10x the amount of fun as this showing up to a place knowing absolutely nobody.

I forget if we had just taught them what it meant, or if this was just prior to telling them.
An orb spider? lol idfk
Bah, we tried, but the ferry wasn't operating and we weren't interested in flying.
lol geez brah, so wise. So cultured. This was a 4 generation family vacation that I just tagged along on. Sometimes you take what you can get you know?

Eh, for your first couple times I'd recommend somewhere relatively safe but has some culture.
I actually did one of my first solo trips in Puerto Rico, and it was a good place to get the feet wet. The key is staying somewhere where you can walk out of your accommodations and get a beer like within 2 minutes walk. Although I sometimes do it now(because I know where to go out partying and such solo), staying in a hotel is generally a bad option and AirBnb is even worse for solo unless the only reason you're traveling is to bang chicks(in which case AirBnb is generally the best as you have full access and no restrictions).
If you look young and have a young vibe, staying in party hostels is generally the best way for solo. Although it can become too much at times with drinking for 5-6 hours every day, you'll never meet so many people in such a short amount of time as you would in a party hostel.

Man, I got a bad feeling about the future of travel. Apparently NZ is doubling down, and not letting their industry slip, but honestly I don't see how we can ever get back. But, barring the pessimistic thoughts, I will 100% always push southeast asia. Particularly Thailand, but honestly, Vietnam, Cambodia, Bali.. all are great. I have found Thai people to be the most sincere though. Maybe it's the Buddhism? Pros of Thailand: it's cheap, the people are nice and speak enough english, the food is the best in the world (my opinion, but give me dat street meat!!), fresh fruit smoothies, $5 massages, happy ending should you choose, plenty of cultural/religious/environmental sights/events/locations (speaking mostly of the north, Chiang Mai/Chiang Rai)
It's just the best brah. Maybe also eastern Europe sounds like your thing, but I haven't explored extensively, and don't have much to say.

The thing is, if you're in a party hostel you're not really alone. It takes like 10 minutes to meet people to party or hang with for the day.
However, with solo travel you're always going to be alone at times which you have to be totally comfortable with yourself. If you're not a relatively confident person, in a country like Colombia you're probably going to deal with some situations that make you a bit uncomfortable. Like the first time I went to Colombia solo, I ended up hanging out by the pool in my hotel most of the time because the street hustlers were so aggressive. And although I have ice water running through my veins now, if I'm hung over or running on like 3 hours sleep, they still sometimes throw me off. But it makes you a better person overall.
