I mean they normally add quite a bit of caramel to their bourbons and ryes at bottling (almost everyone does, Scotch makers too, I don't mind) but this one they really have heaped in so much. Why did they add so much? It's not bad as you expect sweetness and caramel taste with a bourbon, but seriously this is heavy on the caramel.

Is this normal for Bourbons, that they add extra caramel in the more expensive range?
I would say it's not normal... really depends on what the maker is going for... I must admit I'm not a huge fan of US macro bourbon makers, but they have use in mixing at least!
The biggest name in premium US bourbon is Pappy Van Winkle and there is some caramel in many of their offerings but I don't recall them being over the top with the sweetness. I've had some other top of the line bourbons and they vary greatly.

It doesn't seem easy to get hold of here, at least not for less than crazy money! (and I mean REALLY crazy money like close on $3k for Pappy Van Winkle's 15 Year Old Family Reserve). I'll have to take your word on that

Indeed, I have a bartender friend in my state who has some 'ins' on the state lottery (no kidding there is a lottery for buyers) and he messages me when he gets some in. I usually pay $20-80 for a shot - that's his cost .... obviously only once in a great while!
