I'm a manager at a small company and about 20 years ago received a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle. I don't drink at all now, but even then, I didn't drink bourbon. I gave it to my mom but mistakenly mentioned at work how much she enjoyed it with coke Sacrilege apparently

Had never had an Old Fashioned and they are very much in fashion here in Wisconsin at supper clubs, anyways about a year ago my wife & I were in a local establishment noted for them so we figured what the hell why not try it? We both hated them & she more so, as a result I ended up drinking both of the damn things and will never have one again, far too sweet and I love sugar.

Most cocktails are marked towards ladies, made brightly coloured and overpoweringly sweet. There *should* be exceptions not as sweet. Traditionally there are some marketed towards men and not so sweet, such as margarita, old fashioned (which does involve some sugar but shouldn't be made very sweet), in recent years TVR (tequila vodka red bull), vodka Martini. I didn't include gin and tonic or gin and grapefruit (Hunter S Thomson's favourite) as they're not cocktails (based on alcoholic and 3 or more liquids in a glass), but you get my drift
Maybe you should be brave, buy a bottle of Angostura bitters and make it yourself (not very sweet), try it with a smoother rye rather than Bourbon or Scotch. It's one of the few cocktails that counts as macho so you must grow a Burt Reynolds moustache to drink it (that bit is optional for any ladies reading here)

My current favs are Johhnie Walker Green Label ($43 at my local Costco) and Glenfiddich 14 yr bourbon cask finish ($45 at Total Wine).
However, Green label is far smoother and in all honesty, one of the SMOOTHEST blends I've ever tasted. I had my buddy stop by last weekend (bourbon drinker) and he finished his glass of green label before me and had 3 more drinks and I had to drop him home..lol. That's how smooth GL is.
My wife is a wine drinker and hates whiskeys in general but I can make a old fashioned with these 2 and she loves it (2 ice-cubes topped with tonic water and splash of ginger ale with a lemon wedge).________________________________________________________

You have a point but I'll give it a couple more weeks, Karl lol A'bunadh is now my favourite! I was looking forward to getting more and was truly devastated to find most stores here are now out of stock, can't get Ardbeg Uigeadail either. Have been looking forward to trying it since you mentioned it in another thread. I could buy online of course but am filled with dread at the thought of having a nice bottle accidentally delivered to my awful neighbour.

There was a time when I was very clueless on what type of drink to get. Once we went to a very up scale classy restaurant (rich old guys with younger women type place). I told the waiter to get me a mixed drink, I said give me something masculine and strong.,,,...
The mofo gave some light pink BS and it was a regular size full glass of it, tasted like strawberries, I said really, are kidding????????

I know what you mean...I've been trying to get my hands on a Springbank 10 year old for going on year now and I can't find it anywhere. Glad you like the A'bunadh. I've never had the Aberlour 12-year old, so when you finally break it open, let me know what you think of it!

Wanted to post in this thread since I saw it... but I seriously have too many 'favorites' to select 1 or 2.
I started as a committed Bourbon fan, but living overseas and spending time in several distilleries in Scotland broadened my whisky horizons. Now I can be happy with a simple Bulleit or a Yamazaki, or a Talisker.. Irish, Canadian, it's all good! The only major player I haven't really delved into is the burgeoning Indian whisky scene. I'll get there. It's never too late!

I've never really liked bourbon very much because of the sweetness. To me, much of it tastes like sickeningly sweet cherry flavored cough medicine, but based on your recommendations above, I decided to give it another shot. So yesterday, I grabbed a bottle of Russell's Reserve SiB, and I gotta say, it is pretty good. It is still a bit on the sweet side for me, but it isn't overpowering and has a nice balance with other flavors. It was good enough to pique my interest in bourbons. I may have to try a few more on your list.
I also picked up a bottle of the Bowmore 15-year old. It is one of the few Islay expressions I have yet to try. I'll have to sample a bit of it tomorrow. It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

My BIL is a big scotch drinker who has ventured into bourbon. Wild Turkey Rare Breed 116.8 proof, Russell's Reserve Single Barrel 110 proof, any Barrel Strength Four Roses Single Barrels, and Old Grand Dad Bottled in Bond and the 114 proof (good value bourbons) are some that I suggested and he seemed to enjoy.
Also rye is generally less sweet than bourbon, so you may try that. Bulleit Rye is a decent introduction to "high-rye" ryes.To resist despair

I've been drinking the odd sip of Jim Beam Single Barrel Bourbon (not where I bought it, but here's a link https://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/p/...-single-barrel). It's growing on me... not bad, but they have added so much caramel. I mean they normally add quite a bit of caramel to their bourbons and ryes at bottling (almost everyone does, Scotch makers too, I don't mind) but this one they really have heaped in so much. Why did they add so much? It's not bad as you expect sweetness and caramel taste with a bourbon, but seriously this is heavy on the caramel.
Is this normal for Bourbons, that they add extra caramel in the more expensive range?
