If I had to estimate, I'd say there are about 5-10 regular posters here in the over 35 who lean left (myself included). Everyone else pretty much leans to the right. Some are outspoken, some are passive. Good people nonetheless.

I'm not up to speed on Libertarian platform, but I gotta say that being NPA or Independent is very freeing in our political environment. Although I lean left on more issues than I lean right, I could never call myself either a Democrat or a Republican. Just the thought of it makes me cringe.

I'm not up to speed on Libertarian platform, but I gotta say that being NPA or Independent is very freeing in our political environment. Although I lean left on more issues than I lean right, I could never call myself either a Democrat or a Republican. Just the thought of it makes me cringe.

I identify as Libertarian first. Problem is 3rd party candidates usually split the vote in favor of dems. Libertarians emphasize personal freedoms and less centralized power in govt. Small govt, local govt as outlined in constitution.

But on social issues, they would be considered 'liberal' since the govt should not be involved in people's personal decisions.


That said, libertarians find themselves close cousins to true 'conservatives' republicans except in regards to some social issues where the libertarian would more align with Dem views. Gay marriage would be a good example where libertarians would say the govt does not belong legislating in regards to that.

But they do not believe in a living constitution. One that changes. So they would not approve of democrats legislating moral issues. Eg title 9 stuff.


All in all, you will find Libertarians in the Republican party, but I dont think you would ever find one in the democrats. Small govt, lots of personal freedom. Pretty much the opposite of what the democratic party stands for.

Left Libertarianism is most certainly a thing and is pretty much the origin of Libertarianism, the right wing aspect is a modern phenomenon in the US.

I am not sure talking about 'origins' is relevant. The 'origin' of the democrat party could be said as the party of segregation. You are arguing semantics.

To me a Libertarian is the same as an agnostic, they are hedging their bets and unwilling to commit to either side.

Im not sure libertarian philosophy is any sort of workable philosophy at scale. Sure, everyone wants the government out of their lives, but at 300 million people it doesn't really hold up
