    Is inline six engine the new V8?

    Noticed even M4 in BMW comes in six cylinder now and most sporty sedans are getting harder to find in V8....infact the supercars which used to come in V10 or V12 are nowadays in V8 with twin-turbochargers.



    There was a time when BMW m5 was a v10 but nowadays all performance sedans come in mostly inline 6


    So is inline six the new V8?

    Or are there still a lot of sports cars 2020 onwards that still come in v8?

    Turbocharged I6 or V6 will generally make more torque than a naturally aspirated V8... same peak HP with a fatter powerband. Just doesn't sound as good usually and less throttle response

    In all Asian countries, there is a road and license tax that is based on the size of the engine. This tax needs to paid yearly and its expensive. A 3.0 Liter would cost you about 1k a year on average and a 5.0 liter would cost you over 2k.

    This factors heavily when automakers are deciding what type of engines to develop.

    A w204 C63 would cost 3k a year in taxes.

    I think another reason most makers use the Inline6 is cause its shape is easier to fit turbos and a hybrid system. If it was a V6 maybe the engine would be too wide?

    Auto manufacturers are replacing N/A V8s with Turbo 6s generally, not Turbo V8s. AMG is the only exception off the top of my head.

    So in the comparison of N/A V8 vs. its equivalent replacement (most people have a finite amount of resources, after all) being the boosted 6... the boosted 6 indeed has more torque. A boosted V8 will cost you more and there really aren't that many modern cars that have boosted V8s (AMG E63, BMW M5, etc)

    BMW x5 50I and M also has a boosted v8.
    Cadillac CTS-V has a 6.2l supercharged v8


    I'm sure there's more but that's just off the top of my head. These engines aren't going anywhere but you're going to only see them on 100k+ cars soon.

    That's kinda weird generalization to make. What makes you think that's a new trend? BMW has had I6 for years. Most others use V configuration.
