This is a new one (for me).
Last week I did my normal Leg day with squats, leg extensions, leg curls & hip thrusters. Didn't notice any problems during the workout.
The next day I was feeling fine until late in the afternoon (about 24 hours after the workout) when the lower part of my right lateral hamstring muscle (around the side/back of the knee) began to get seriously sore and started to swell up considerably. I took some aspirin and applied alternating cold/heat to the area and after about two and a half hours the swelling suddenly went down (but the pain remained).
The next day I woke up to extreme soreness/stiffness and a large black bruise behind my knee and running down the upper part of my right calf.
Now a week has gone by and I am still experiencing the soreness/stiffness and the bruise isn't really any better. It doesn't really bother me once I am up and walking about but if I sit for 30 minutes or so it stiffens back up and the pain returns until I have gotten up and "walked it off" for a few minutes.
Anyone else have something like this just pop up out of the blue like this?

Sounds like a hamstring strain/tear, prob should've only used ice (not heat) for the first few days and kept off it as much as possible. Is the bruise shape/darkness at least changing and moving down your leg via gravity?
There may have been tightness building over time or since your last Leg day (or if you did any other athletic activity). See a doctor if you want to confirm what it is and the severity.

I made a tele-doc appointment and sent them pictures along with a detailed description of what happened during the consultation.
The doctor's opinion is to just keep taking anti-inflammatory meds, apply topical creams (icy hot, tiger balm, Etc) and see if it continues to improve on its own.
However, if the pain hasn't improved by the middle of next week or the bruise gets worse, to see a local sports medicine specialist and probably have some imaging done.~ Like Tae-Kwon-Leap, my goals are not a path to a door, but a road leading forever towards the horizon.
