Is it simply because people are buying it all up in mass quantities? I can see that for 223/5.56 but all I'm trying to do is get a 20 round box for my 270 for deer season and can't find anywhere locally. Or is it because production is down due to Covid/Gov't/Etc.?
Why are primers non-existent?
How do you see future supply/demand with current developments?

This. Huge supply chain disruptions from covid earlier this year compounded by a huge jump in demand.
Best bet is to get online and ask for text updates when a site has your desired caliber in stock and check local shops about once/week. It’s probably about to get even worse now though, so you might be out of luck.+positive crew+

Demand is very high, and there's only 4 companies that make primers. Remington, Federal, winchester, and cci. It's just that simple. The election process itself increases demands and panic buying, but you also have covid and the Communist Monkey coilition rioting for the past several months non stop. Cops are proving to be ineffective at defending law abiding citizens and in many cases outright treacherous in their policing.
Things will not level out for a while.RIP Colin Flaherty

The US army doesn't sell ammunition to civilians and they have exclusive contracts from manufacturers.
You have to realize retail stores get ammunition last. If you contact an ammunition manufacturer directly and order 100,000 rounds of ammunition you'd likely get that shipped to your home before you find 1,000 rounds of that same ammunition in a store.
I know guys that order/buy ammunition for police departments and they aren't having any issues buying 5.56, 9mm and .40 S&W. You call a company with a $20,000 order and you get better service then a guy trying to spend $200 for a smaller quantity of the same product.

Big round of first time gun buyers with corona
Big round of first time gun buyers with riots
Hoarding due to election year
Hoarding due to anticipated shortages and political fears
New gun buyers don’t know prices and buy at outrageous price anyway
Basically corona + riots caused mass influx of new gun owners
Prices always go up on election year anyways and Biden is particularly hard on guns.
