i'm still driving a 2004 Lexus that i bought brand new and paid cash for in 2004. it's a 2004 with 160K miles now and still runs great. but i'm upgrading to a new (or slightly used) Lexus very soon. i like to buy quality, exactly what i want, pay cash, and drive it "forever". this one has been 17 years!!! i'm probably a little overdue but when you have to write a big check for $25-$50K+ you think twice.

Well I leased a car out of college. 2015 altima $204 a month (dad worked at nissan). Then leased a 2017 nissan Rogue with all the upgrades $279 a month.

But that lease is up december 31st. My dad now is semi-retired and sells used cars with his buddy at his business so I just got a 2010 Honda Accord for $2500 cash (would sell for $4500 typically).

I plan on riding that into the ground. Then repeat with a better used. I will never have a car payment again. Srs. Zero debt crew (until I get a mortgage). Just buy used and run it to the ground. Then repeat with a better car with the money you saved during that time.

I would get rid of that car OP. Not worth it. Get a toyota or honda for that same amount it is to fix your subaru. Get a car that will actually last and can handle the high mileage well.

No because if something breaks I fix it. Except for the piece of sheit jetta. The thing was unnecessarily complicated and difficult to repair and the parts cost way too much. And I got rid of the corvette because people kept harassing me wanting to take pictures and ask a bunch of questions and **** whenever I pumped gas or went anywhere. Had people ask rude **** like "is that your dad's car" like bitch no I saved my money for 3 years and bought it and fixed it ass hat rude mother fuker.

First was an 06 TR that I had zero issues with. Traded it for a race truck and he sold it to his buddy who blew the tranny.
Next was a 2011. Consumed oil and spun the main bearings. Ended up throwing a short block in it.
Cars are huge pains in the ass to work on. I’d sell it and go Toyota/Lexus, or Honda. Would also throw GM in the hat but mainly if you’re looking at trucks/LS based vehicles.

Around the 200k mark is usually a good benchmark to start considering it. Roughly speaking of course.

I've only actually switched cars once. Never buy new, both have been used as well. First car lasted me from age 16 until 29. I think it had around 215k miles on it.

Current one has around 94k I think and I've had it almost 5 years now. Seems to be working well. Figure it will at least get me to 40 years old, though I don't think it will last as long as my first.

If you're worried about money, never buy a bmw.

Are bmw’s expensive to maintain? I see some 2013 awd’s going for 10-14k
I drive a 2012 328i I got new - about 90k miles. I spent around 2k once for an engine issue, new hoes, etc.. Hoping it all keeps going well. Run flat tires though are killer, and I don’t bother with those anymore for sure.

Just let my 06 SUV go due to head gasket issue (expensive repair I wasn’t willing to do myself). Bought a new Tacoma Off Road and will likely drive it for 10-15 years. I only buy cars when I need to. Typically buy late model used, but new vs used for Tacoma’s was only a few grand that was cancelled out with cheap apr on loan.

My current DD is 4 years old and I think it might be a record for the longest I've owned a car.

I paid it off 2 years ago and it's only got 25k miles on it. Looks and drives like a brand new car.

I'm not a GREAT person to ask. I've had 30ish cars in 6ish years. Well maybe that makes me the right person to ask.

Some good advice for budget bros. Sometimes a cheap, cash vehicle isn't the best. You can nickel and dime yourself into a situation it would have been cheaper to make a payment with a warranty.

Didn't have a WRX, but had a Subaru and the exact same thing happened to me but only had 115,000 miles. Got a Honda and probably won't go back to Subaru. You just have to be realistic about your financial situation in the future.

Disagree. Dad is in the business.

If I went and leased a new car right now from Nissan, I can get a new Rogue for $329 a month with a 820 credit score. That's right about 4k a year. I just bought a used honda with new brakes and high miles for $2500. Even if it takes a chitter in 2 years, that's a difference of 8k to $2500. Just buy a car that actually lasts. Oil changes, maybe new tires, and a few maintenance things won't turn the $2500 car into an 8k worth of payments for a leased car after 2 years, which you still have to get oil changes, and anything else that may get you upcharged when you turn it in.

Plus I'll have more money for cash flow each month. I'll pass. Auto loans are $1.2 trillion dollars and makes up a large chunk of debt per household. Always go used unless you can buy new cash. But even then just buy a year old.

how do you get rid of them? buying is the easy part,

only sold a car once, private party and they wanted it when I was moving so it was easy. but selling 30 cars in 6 years seems exhausting, had to be a lot of tire kickers and time wasters?

they say that but when I looked i did not see very many used 1-3 year old cars at all, most of them had flood damage or some chit or the asking price vs the incentive prices for new wasnt even worth it. Sure if you can find the magic unicorn that has 8k miles on it and is 25% cheaper but good luck

Been driving my 2007 Chrysler Sebring for about six years now but this might be its last season

No huge mechanical issues but just trashed my summer tires and there are lots of smaller things wrong with it. Guess we’ll see...

This is why it helps to know someone in the business. Or a mechanic.

A lot of flood damage cars don't have bad flood damage. A lot of them don't even have real flood damage and are just tossed via insurance. A buddy just bought a ford that was "flood damaged" but the guy just laughed and said it was tossed for insurance. It was completely fine. (we know the guy).

So I would start getting connections in the business. Ask friends if they have mechanics that are friends, or find out if your neighbors are, etc.

That's fine. I was "iN tHe BuSiNeSs" (because apparently being in the business makes you an expert) for a number of years.

You're answer is both right, and wrong. YES, some new/newer vehicle purchases are worth it, some aren't. In my example I should have clarified, I was referring to a slightly used vehicle. Let someone else take the hit. I just bought a diesel truck. The extra 20-30 grand it was going to cost me to have a brand new one, over a 3 year old one with low miles just isn't worth it in my opinion. I've bought a number of nice trucks, and usually have done pretty good on them. The last 3 diesels, I actually made money on 2 of them after keeping them for a few years each.

On older (budget) used, again you are right and wrong. Yes there are broke dick civics out there that will drive miles and miles with little to no maintenance. On the flip side there are plenty of used vehicles that will fall apart and do nothing but cost you money. My brothers had 2 civics that; 1. Had an engine go out, 2. that had to have major valve train work. We've had 2 nice early 2000 civics in the last 5 years, both for less than 5k a piece. and Actually almost profited on each of them. But at some point when you drive as much as we do, sometimes you want something that rides a little better, is a little more comfortable, or maybe a little safer for a car seat in the back. For example I bought a 2001 S10 for 700 bucks when I worked at the dealership. Thought I was king dick I got such a good deal. Then I realized how awful the mother ****er rode down the highway after a number of months, and wanted something nicer.

So in conclusion, no I'm not saying go out and get some random ****ing new car. You still need to buy with a brain.
