    I’m from the East Midlands in the UK, house prices here are cheap compared to big cities and the south, a bog standard house in the south would cost what a mansion here costs, just glad I got on the property ladder when I did.

    Surely the bubble will burst? Seems to be a huge problem in the western world.

    Yup, tho I got the house that I want and cheap property taxes.

    My business already required traveling, so being within a certain distance to a metropolitan center isn't a requirement. And most jobs that I bid on are already located within a 1hr driving distance from my house.

    Crunch the numbers on this before you do it. It can be a good move, and yes, you pay yourself the interest on a 401k loan, but because of the mortgage interest deduction, you might find the opportunity cost of pulling from your 401k is higher than just sucking it up on the mortgage payment.

    There's also the issue of what happens if you change jobs. Some 401k loans become due in full in 60 days, etc., or else you have to treat the whole thing as income for that year, fully taxed with a 10% penalty.

    I'm just trying to save up as much east coast money as I can, and in a couple years have a good sized DP for something out west. Houses have jumped up around here, and being a single guy makes it tougher. However from what I remember putting 20% down on a 200k house for a 20 year mortgage was only like 1k a month or so, it's not that bad even for someone single and not working as a cashier.

    When I eventually buy a property outside of Texas, top 3 possible locations would be:

    Colorado ( castle rock or Colorado springs. 500k would get your decent land size and enough Sq Foot )
    Florida ( Destin crazy high, 800k for a CONDO that faces the ocean ) i'm sure there's some deals somewhere still near the coast
    Arizona ( Sedona is nasty beautiful, would be epic to be 60+ and retire there. )

    Dual family income with a not degenerate partner = you’re essentially paying the equivalent of rent and have a mortgage.

    Source = girlfriend pays me rent and I live in my 1BR apartment effectively paying less than if I rented the same square ft. in the same area for myself. Down payment is two years of deliberate saving.

    I'm pretty optimistic about housing demand in mid-sized major cities, basically any urban area with a relatively low cost of living. Strong economic potential to offer high-paying jobs, especially as the American workforce transitions to working from home and more high-paying tech and finance jobs (and other industries soon) begin to migrate from the high CoL cities to the other major cities worth living in
