Tired of staring at my phone during lunch break at work, while on the train, etc.
Any alternatives? I don’t wanna keep doing something just because everyone else does it

Ded srs, until recently didn't have a smartphone for something like 2 and a half years. It was really an eye-opening experience because I realized just how difficult it is for most people to occupy their own mind for more than 30 seconds without automatically pulling out their dopamine salt lick.
Honestly, taking the elevator down 10 floors and 99% percent of people have to pull out their phone because they can't sit still for the journey. People sitting in the metro staring at their phone while it loads super slowly due to poverty "free" public internet-- but it's better than nothing right? People waiting in line for <1 minute and have to pull out the phone to cruise the gram just in case. People in movie theaters using their phones instead of watching the movie they paid to see. Really toxic mass addiction in my opinion.
Try carrying a book with you during commutes and get some reading done. Trying just looking at the world around you and thinking about yourself and/or others. I honestly think it was one of the best things I've ever done for myself.

Kinda wish I could do this but I rely on ******** to access certain groups I’m a part of where they post important information. Also it’s my only way of contacting certain people.
Tbh, I’m tired of social media. It’s a vapid, toxic culture that breeds fakeness, degeneracy, and ironically, social alienation.*Deadlifts pants after taking a chit crew*

tbh reading a book is almost exactly the same.
brb looking down at something in your hand
brb reading off of said item in your hand
yea there is more value from the contents of a good book compared to reading off of ******** but theres tons of valuable things to read on your phone as well
things that would actually provide something different would be to have a conversation with someone, to just take in your surroundings, or to just ponder on something philisophicalCertified 1200 ng/l T

A book is far more constructive than phone-scrolling for several reasons, but mainly because a book is a cohesive, semi-long-term task you begin and end at specified times. It's not quite at the level of "setting and achieving a goal," but it's close.
Meanwhile, yes of course, if you're reading an eBook on your smartphone-- yeah that's the same thing. But be honest, you're not doing that. You're scrolling through chit content and tapping on something interesting, browsing it for ~30 seconds and moving on to the next dopamine fix. It's not a focused task. It has no clear beginning or ending. It has no structure. You rarely learn non-trivial information.

I dont own a cellphone of any kind. Havent owned one since 2005, and I've never owned a smart phone. Never will.
If you ask me 'what should I do instead of looking at my phone', its hard for me to answer since Ive never had a phone to look at. If Im in a place where I just have to sit and wait, I just sit and wait. When standing in line, I just stand in line."I yam what I yam" - Popeye the sailor

I get the feeling that I should put away my phone in public place when seeing everyone else on theirs out of non-conformity. So I spend the next few minutes looking around not sure what to do, I personally would not strike up a conversation with the people cause I don't like most people in generally. Made be a people watcher and observe them, then getting bored with that.
So I go back to my phone which you can read on as well and the multiple book apps out there.
