Big whoosh at the onset of maintenance - hormones?

Twice in a row now, as soon as I switch from ~12 weeks of consecutive calorie deficit (over 500 daily) to a maintenance phase to drop diet fatigue, I lose 2-3 lbs as soon as I increase calories. This weight stays off the entire duration of the 6-8 week maintenance phase. Common sense would have told me that my weight would go UP as I up calories. My only idea is that perhaps there was a significant amount of stress hormones during the diet that caused water retention. What do you think is going on?

It could be stress/cortisol related, or possibly the food you eat in a deficit has more sodium that what you are switching to? Are you taking creatine?

However, from recent personal experience I know that I gain 3-4 pounds within a couple of days of switching back to maintenance.

Thanks, sodium has definitely gone up on maintenance, and no creatine (stomach issues). I guess we can chalk it up to just one of those weird individual variations. What you experience makes a lot more sense.

Happened with me recently as well

I had to take an off from the gym and pause my running because I got sick with the flu...
I increased my calories by 500 and did no exercise except walking in my house... to my surprise I had lost 1.5 kgs by doing nothing and just increasing calories... but now it means I can diet on higher calories

I lose weight at the start of maintenance. As in the first couple days. Then it stabilizes at that lower weight.
