Basing it on actual "4k" models commercially available. Talking strictly in terms of economy basically.
If you're under 43" it seems like buying a monitor is a better option.
For typical TV use, if you're buying less than 43" you have way more options on a quality 1080 TV than a 4k. Though I've only shopped for 55"+ in recent years so not sure if that's still the case.***Mariah Carey is my 10/10 Crew***

Switched from an older Samsung 1080p LED TV to an LG CX 55" TV and jesus christ it's incredible. Srsly might be the best TV I've ever had. The screen itself is thinner than an iPhone, which just really blows my mind.

I literally have the same tv, I also felt dizzy and nauseous. It went away after a while and i can’t imagine myself going back to a poverty 1080p tv
-Some people say good things come to those who wait, truth is, good things come to those who work..... who work later.....who work harder...... who are willing to go further than anyone else to get them. If you're waiting for good things to come to you, you'll be waiting for a pretty long time.

Also when I got my ridiculous 4K TV I noticed that a lot of cable content looks like ass, which is because most of your incoming signals are 720 or 1080. When this is put onto a 4K TV, it will upscale it 4 times to the 4K resolution. What happens is the TV tries to blend things in together, but it ends up looking like a bright ass mess. I fixed my TV settings to remove all sharpness and it came out pretty good. The only pain is that you really can't get 4K cable unless your company offers it, and usually it's ridiculously expensive. TBH 4K only really works if the incoming signal is outputting 4K like a 4K Blu Ray, or if it's a Series X/PS5. Where you will get most of your 4K content will be through streaming services and apps. It should be noted too that a really good 4K TV will run you north of $1000, and normally these things if used in a living room/den, it can be professionally calibrated. People are talking about 8K TV's when the industry has barely adopted 4K. I bought my TV for $1300 with extended warranty when it was originally $1800 sans warranty. This TV will likely last me at least 10 years and be a good investment to me IMO.
I went from a Samsung 1080p LED TV to an LGCX 55". At first I was disappointed by the quality of the football game I was watching, but then when I fukked around with the setting's it looked infinitely better. It's still not full great quality, but when I sit back further I can't even tell. When I'm gaming and much closer to the TV or when I'm streaming 4K content, it looks 1000x better than what I had before.*Mechanical Engineering Crew*

Went over to my dad and brought my pc with me because I've got some movies on it he wants to watch. Plus I've got the SVP program that smooths everything to 60fps and wanted to show that to him. So I get it hooked up to his almost new Toshiba 4k amazon smart TV and when the desktop loads it looks like crap, visible dithering, kind of washed out. It looks like when I've got my monitor on YUV colorspace, looks awful. I load up a few movies and they look horrible. I turned it on to his cable, apparently on 4k, and it looks about the same, not much better. Dafuq happened to picture quality? It was sharp but the colors were horrible. I just picked up a 2013 Insignia 1080p 39" tv that moggs it completely. Same movie files look incredible on it.
