save enough to not be blindsided by stupid crap (car repairs, house, family emergency) then spend the rest. acquire experiences, not things.

Stop viewing people through the lens of a cartoon/movie character.... just because a family is successful doesn't mean their kids will be drug addicted weirdos who don't appreciate chit.

Denying your children a better life than you had yourself is selfish, you have a warped mindset.

No chit it's not guaranteed they turn out that way, it's just much higher chance. You're not denying them anything, it's not theirs and they didn't earn it. Why do you think people like warren buffett and bills gates aren't leaving their children their fortunes??

They are intelligent to enough to know giving your children money beyond providing basic needs is foolish.

I know a lot of UHNWIs and their kids are absolute failures. I’ll tell you why:

    1. The wealthy pick their spouses’ credentials over looks
    2. The kids know they will take over the company when they are 30
    3. Due to 1, the kids look like anuses that have massive egos

Having kids that are better than you, for wealthy people, is as rare as being a Chad.

    Cheers

it basically comes down to income, if you have a high income saving is easy mode, I literally can't spend all the money I make (150k + / /year, nothing insane). But at that income it's super easy to live comfortably and save 30k / year, 20 years of investing in a simple index fund or whatever and you're 1.5 MM at least for retirement with a paid off house.

I'm honestly hoping the housing market will crash 20% in my area so I can buy a new better house with cash and rent out this current place, right now I just can't get together 20% down payment for a 700k house, it's stupid expensive rn

Just lol@comparing everyone to Warren Buffett and Bill Gates

BRB Kids get to choose to do anything they want without limitation because of a lack of money/resources (That's bad in your mind)
BRB Having something tangible to pass down that the family can enjoy and make memories with like a cottage or beach house (That's bad in your mind)
BRB Get to take family on amazing vacations/experiences (That's bad in your mind)
BRB Give your kids access to things you could never dream about (That's bad in your mind)

I co-sign everything you are saying here. The only thing I might disagree with you on (might as we have yet to discuss this but I guess IM bringing it up now) is why live "near" the beach vs "on" the beach. With what I know about your lifestyle (which seems pretty cool), why didnt you work and save just a little bit more to live on the beach? That way you can wake up, walk right outside your bedroom and be staring at the bay or beach with that unobstructed breeze, view and sounds?

If you save money without an investment then yeah that's a waste of time. But if you're saving it so you can buy a considerable asset or make a sizeable investment then yeah, saving money is good. I'm trying to buy a house rn and the market is out of whack with COVID. I'm just going to keep saving money so I can buy a house.

As a finance and economics professional, I'd say the chances of a global financial meltdown in the next 20 years is somewhere between 10%-20%. All your sheckels would go to 0 or close to it.

I could live on the beach now if I wanted to but I don't think it's worth the huge premium (for me). I'd rather be 2-3 miles west of the ocean and closer to my stores, gym, restaurants, bars, highway. I don't want to go to the beach every day. I have the pool.
Believe it or not it gets old. It's hard to comprehend that unless you live near the beach. I love the beach, but once a week is plenty. I'd rather live near the beach and close to the action. The sweet spot for me is 2-3 miles out. You don't have to fight the traffic and intercoastal drawbridges to get anywhere which can be a huge PIA. I like a simple, easy life.

Makes sense, the property is exponentially more but from a money stand point, it has probably appreciated at a much higher rate than a property inland over the last 10 years?
Your other reasons make sense, just overall easier living and much more efficient than the things you like to do.
My uncle has a place on the newport beach area right along the coastline. "going to the beach" I agree kind of sucks. Sitting on a public beach that is. But sitting on your patio with an unobstructed view of the beach and breeze I cant imagine would get old but I will take your word for it since I have never lived on the beach.

So as a moneyphag what's the one way the US can come back from this insane debt, lack of everyone's buying power, and hyperinflation?

What with how the avg home cost in 2000 being 110k ish to now 300k ish.

Now don't get me wrong, if I had $50-$100M+ I might think differently.
