Ive been lifting for almost 5 years on trial and error but ive been wanting to get ready to go and try to compete at a show but I lack a lot on my back including density and the lean aspect of it . I only have back strength due to playing football but I haven't quite figured out which machines or exercises will make my back develop better do any of you have any advice??

As noted above, an idea of what you've done thus far via "trial and error" would be helpful so people know what hasn't worked to your satisfaction and can offer other suggestions. It could very well be a matter of programming rather than or in addition to exercise selection.
As far as leanness goes, that may be more a matter of nutrition, but post pics if you want more feedback. Face pulls is really BGz's favorite topic above to talk your ear off about.
