Stage 2 of Majors home gym completed

Hi all , been busy with new ideas .
I was never happy with my squat racks , as they always moved when I re-racked .
So I bought a full cage , but used it to make two squat racks pictured below . I now have long safety bars for bench pressing. I am going to add a U shaped piece that sits on the floor behind the new squat racks to increase their strength incase a loaded bar was actually dropped onto the safeties .

I also took one of my three wall bumper plate racks apart and tried to improve it’s design.
Ideally all three should have been done at once , as now I have to set up my tablesaw and router again in the future , but I wasn’t sure if I’d like the outcome .

Here’s the how two of my home made bumper racks still look like at the moment . I used 2x6 lumber for the vertical sections , then a piece of 2x4 on the top and bottom .
I always thought they looked a bit slapped together like that , so I had this idea to still use the vertical parts ,but replace the top and bottom with steel.

So here’s the first one I rebuilt in the pic below .
Used 1/2” steel on the very bottom and welded it to a 2”x3” angle iron .
I tapped threads into the 1/2” steel plate in order to use adjustable feet , and just used bolts in the the top that thread into the wood header above the rack .
I’m pleased with the outcome .

I am changing everything that was yellow to orange eventually.

    Far shots

The wall racks have a 10M bolt on each side which go into a hole I drilled in the 2x4 above it .
That way they can’t fall forward .

I purchased the dumbbells locally threw our Culligan dealer .
$3500 for 5 lbs to 90’s in 5 pound increments

No I live in that chit hole called Cranbrook. It’s the eastern part of the province, but accessibility was a bonus in my younger years

I am going to repaint the orange again , as I find it too retina burning.
I should have used rustoleum in the first place , but I didn’t find it scratch resistant like the tremclad .
But I do like how it’s a little more subtle.

Here’s a comparison of the two brands . Rustoleum on the left and tremclad on the right .

Good question actually. Previously I never used collars, but when I purchased two new Ohio Bars , I found that the plates slide easier ,so now I use collars .
But the good news is I have safety bars now . I only use them when I’m benching two plates , but ideally I should always use them ,as I have a tendency to bench with a suicide grip . It’s really hard to re train yourself after doing it that way for so long , but I’m trying .

Btw I have to say I love the Ohio bars . My old bars were bent and had a tendency to try and to roll in my hand, making for a dangerous situation when your benching heavy , especially with a suicide grip .
It’s so nice having a quality perfectly straight bar now . I’d never buy a cheap brand again

My dream was 315 , but failed . At the time, 46 years old , I was flat benching 225-9 , and I thought the bench calculator said you should get one rep @315 .
It didn’t help that I pretty burnt myself out before trying , but if I can rep 225 when I’m 65 I’ll be content .
I was benching 225x5 in March this year . Not terrible for a guy turning 60 next April

Took a couple more pics . I ordered a few extra J-hooks . This way I don’t have to change the location of the hooks between flat benching or incline.
    Same for squat and deadlift

    Very nice.
Short cuts to success are often paved with lies.
