Lost 100lbs - is this loose skin or fat?

I had been obese till 26, when I finally got my act together and started losing weight through exclusively cardio and diet. Fast forward nine years later, and I’m 143 pounds with a BMI of 20.6 (down from 34.7).

Unfortunately, my stomach and manboobs aren’t quite where I want them to be. I took some photos - grateful if you could tell me whether it looks like fat or loose skin? When standing upright, it looks like I have a belly; but when planking, it looks more like skin folds. I did not do any strength exercise, so my weight loss was not accompanied by muscle building.

loose skin....You will need to give it some time to see where you wind up if you are young enough
Then reevaluate your BF%. and actually add back some fat, trust me it will look better at a bit higher percentage

    Nice!

Trouble is, most of my weight loss had occurred when I was 26 - 32 - and, five years on, the stomach and the manboobs look roughly as they did when I dropped most of the bounds. Hence I'm not expecting things to get better naturally.

    Realistically you have 3 options

    1) live with it

    2) gain muscle/ fat and hope it looks better

    3) surgery

I think a combination of 2 and 3 is the best option if you want to get rid of your loose skin.

I'd go with the live with it answer. You can gain slow with training and it will diminish a bit. I've done this and it did help.

But it's a scar I carry. So what, I'm over it.

How many years of serious and consistent weigh training do you have in OP?

Thanks to everyone who posted here; the trouble with "living with it" is that it basically undoes all the effort I have invested over the past nine years. A body I could be proud of has always been a dream of mine, and I felt incredibly satisfied with having finally made the steps necessary to get me there - so I cannot accept that it's all going to end like that, with a saggy belly and manboobs, even if they're loose skin rather than fat.

I think my next step will be to try the radiofrequency treatment - I understand it is a non-invasive procedure that can tighten the skin without requiring a surgical treatment. Should that fail, I suppose I'll have to think long and hard about a surgery - I've survived three before (for life-saving reasons) and know first-hand that they're anything but pretty. But if a scar across my abdomen is the price to pay, then it might be worth paying.

Try megadozing on vitamin-C. Increase according to bowel tolerance.

Great job on the weightloss. Now if you wanna look firm you'll have to go under the knife. Check out good surgeon in your area for excess skin and possible gyno removal. Gyno most likely due to higher estrogen conversion when you were fat. Pay for it asap and never look back.

Before I opened the pics I expected to see real bad loose skin. It really doesn't look bad at all. But if it bothers you that much I would just put on a bit of weight to tighten it up a bit. I have a very similar problem. As I've got older I don't suit being at a lower body fat %. I can look in real good shape, yet like a crackhead facially lol. So I decided to put on a couple of stone and give up the 6 pack. It bothered me at first but now I'm much happier in my appearance.

Yokel above reply ^^^has the best advise IMO.
After you reach a goal weight stay there and try to build some muscle to fill out a little.
    It will only so much.
Getting rid of the loose skin will certainly tighten you up but will leave scars.
It's a personal decision that one must decide on their own.
You've done well though to loose 100 pounds.
That took a lot of discipline and hard work.
Now do the hard work of adding muscle.
It can be a slow process also and one must be patient.
Get a qualified coach or personal to help guide you in the right direction with training and diet.
    Goos luck.
