High Resting Heart Rate and Overtraining

Could an elevated resting heart rate be an indicator of overtraining?

Thinking of swapping out workout volume for some low intensity cardio this upcoming week to clean up some of my gains during a mass gaining phase and see if it brings down my heart rate. It's been in the mid 90s to low 100s.

That is pretty high. What is a normal resting rate for you?

Are you experiencing severe fatigue? Loss of gym performance across multiple sessions? Problems sleeping? All these together could indicate overreaching.

If resting doesn't fix the issue or it's just the HR issue on its own, I would consult a doctor...

Yes it can, as can an elevated rate during exercise, although I think you'd normally have some other symptoms too. If your rates are normally lower, and it doesn't resolve itself soon, as suggested above see a doctor since it could be more serious issues.

I'm not a doctor, but both my parents are. This is probably what a doctor will tell you: "You should quit lifting weights and do cardio exercise instead". I have been hearing it from 2 doctors for the last 33 years.

You sure it hasn't been "You should do some cardio in addition to just lifting weights"?

I'm sure. I remember my dad and I going to get some formal suits for a wedding. We went to one of those mens stores that specialize in suits. My dad got one pretty easily that fit him. I was in there for an hour. The guy working in the store kept giving me dress coats to try on. If any coat fit my chest/shoulders, the waist was way too big and I looked like David Byrne in "Once in a Lifetime". If any coat fit my waist, my arms would go numb because they were super tight around my shoulders. That's when my dad said "When are you going to quit lifting weights?". I thought to myself..."when I die?".

Anyway, no coat would fit me. It had to be custom tailored around the waist.

I'm a doctor and I can actually make an extremely strong case for doing resistance training life long. I would agree that cardio should be added for health purposes for an individual who has a relatively high resting heart rate (assuming there are no underlying cardiac issues... getting an EKG will be helpful here).

Do you smoke/chew/drink/are you overweight? I have noticed my heart rate has come down quite a bit since completely quitting alcohol and losing weight.

I used to run and now lift. My resting heart rate has moved up to the high 40s from the mid 40s.

Not sure what any of this has to do with the OP’s question, though.
