    Spoiler!
my reaction to vacuuming up a lost detent srping

i havent done that before but with one of my builds i had the rifle 99% complete, but missing a buffer tube spacer on an A2 fixed stock. i bought the part, and installed it, but wasnt paying attention to the rear detent spring, didnt press it back into the lower and ended up screwing the stock back in place, and fuking up the spring in the process.

Popped off on our private range today, and some dickheads in a nearby neighborhood called the Sheriff on us. 2 of them arrived, shot the full auto mp5, asked how we can afford to shoot during these times then left. Fuk them neighbors i guess. We have a bunch of 550 steel out here, its low and we have 12 acres behind us. Guess they called just to be nuisance.

If there was no NFA crap, probably they would primarily be 14.5 or so by default. And the same 11.5 as the go-to for shorter, for all the reasons 11.5 is popular now and to further differentiate vs 14.5 than down a couple to 12.5 would

    What about DMR’s and SPR’s?

Guess one could argue those are better in a different caliber. I assume that would be his argument anyway.

Either way military uses 5.56 AR’s with 18” barrels.

-4" is really fun for a 22lr AR pistol, as the short length can help keep bullets subsonic

-8" is a great barrel length for 300 blk

-10.3" is the shortest you should go for 5.56, and it needs to be a quality rifle. These are made to run suppressed.

-11.5" will give you a much more reliable firearm than a 10.3" barrel will, and adds 1" to the OAL (takes it from 25 to 26" or something, but significantly increases the dwell time on the round.

-13.7" exists because as suppressors have gotten more popular, QD muzzle devices for them have grown in popularity as well. As a result, instead of pinning a long A2 birdcage on a 14.5, companies started pinning suppressor mounts on 13.7" rifles. It's not significantly different from 14.5", but if you want to minimize your BBL length without going NFA or pistol, this is it.

-14.5" is what carbine gas is really tuned for, but runs well with mid-length for the same reasons 11.5 runs really well with carbine. Muzzle devices to get these to 16" are now really, really common.

-16" with carbine gas is a monstrosity born of NFA compliance. 16" midlength runs well, and has a good balance of range and overall length, but it's a long barrel to hang a can off of.

-18" with rifle gas is a soft shooter, and gets some added velocity for flatter trajectories.

-20" is fun for iron sighted A1 and A2 builds. There's not much reason to use a 20" barrel for a 5.56 SPR over an 18". 6.5 Grendels make good use of 20" barrels for shooting out to 1k.

this rifle is a somewhat close representative of what m16s looked like in the vietnam era. some differences being oldschool M16 A1s had thinner barrels, a 1:12 rifling twist (mine has 1:7) and a different, slightly shorter stock. also 20 round aluminum mags, certainly not 40 round pmags. this is a 20" barrel btw

the shorter barrel carbine length ARs are certainly more tactically capable as weapons, 20" builds are more for having fun at the range, and fun to look at.

thing about these larger ARs though, they may be less maneuverable but they arent uncomfortable to shoulder and fire. the rifle has a good balance and feels relatively light. just not as comfortable and light as something like this

the shorter barrel carbine length ARs are certainly more tactically capable as weapons, 20" builds are more for having fun at the range, and fun to look at.

thing about these larger ARs though, they may be less maneuverable but they arent uncomfortable to shoulder and fire. the rifle has a good balance and feels relatively light. just not as comfortable and light as something like this

i was never big on stacking mass pistol mags (although stacking pistol ammo is good). its best to stack rifle mags IMO.

I d say for pistol get a 2-3 regular mags and then 2-3 extended / larger capacity mags (if you need anymore mags/ammo in a situation chances are you are being ambushed and should be firing a rifle and not a hand gun); just my two cents.

6.5 Grendels make good use of 20" barrels for shooting out to 1k.

solid read. I like that you bring the 6.5 grendal into this. I m a fan of that round. dont own a 6.5 but it packs a nice punch

Get 7-8 AR mags and 3 or so mags for your glock and MP.

Always good to have what's considered a "combat load" for if SHTF. Plus, you can practice reloads with empty mags easier if you have multiple empty spares. It's really easy to scoop up 10 pmags because they're discounted most of the time when you buy 10 or more.

Think I'm at about 40-50 AR mags, and 6 mags for each pistol. I buy from time to time and they just accumulated.

I'd say 10 AR mags, just to have a few spare and 4-6 pistol mags.

Minimum of 6. Or whatever number you end up with when you have multiple for each of these categories:

*Loaded with defensive ammo. In and with the pistol, ready in mag pouches, plate carriers, in the car console, etc. Go-mags. You'll need multiple of these.

*Range use. Use and abuse at the range/practice/training, don't worry about dropping them on concrete or getting mud in them, because you don't rely on them defensively. Don't need to go around the house and car taking your ready mags and changing the ammo that's in them and then putting them back

    *Reserve. Unopened. Brand new.

Even with 6 mags that's only 2 in each category, which is pretty damn thin

Also, anyone have issues with Lancer mags or was it just me? I had a few from a recent sale and every single one I tried using was ****ing horrible. They wouldn't feed properly and you had to smack the hell out of it to get it in the mag inserted properly. Do not recommend.

I haven't bought mags for awhile now so IDK if anything changed, but, Lancer L5 AWM are widely considered one of the best AR15-type magazines on the market. Mine have been great.

Don't smack mags to insert anyway, push-pull. And feel free to download all mags (other than one you keep in the gun, if so) to 29 or 28 rounds for ease of insertion on a closed bolt (all mags not just Lancer)

I've never had to smack anything before. Not sure if I got a bad batch, but everyone I had try them had the same issue. I usually run Colt USGI or Pmags and have never ran into a single issue before.

If the stripped lower is registered as 'other' you can make either, then register the complete gun as either rifle or pistol, but again, once set as rifle there is no changing, pistol can go to rifle but not back.

As for upper swaps and not actually changing the registration, a longer upper on a pistol is no problem; a pistol upper on a rifle lower is the problem, (in CA at least). So make it a pistol then drop the rifle upper if you want.
Thank you bro this is what I was thinking too. I'm gonna check with an FFL that I just found recently as well, its so vague and strict at the same time. I'm leaning toward building a pistol now and rifle later, if I can't just switch the rifle upper in and out at will. Would love to have a built scoped upper and a .22 conversion bolt and I'd be happy for years

It seems to me like it would be advantageous to register it as other or pistol no matter what, to have more liberty in the future to design it how you want ya know?

Thank you for this, repped and saved. Was talking to someone yesterday who advised not to go too short (like below 13 or 14) on the barrel or I would not be allowed to shoot it at ranges due to volume. Is that really correct?

Leaning towards an 11.5" 5.56 unsuppressed build. Is that going to be unbearably loud or is it better to go 300blk/longer barrel instead? I'd rather have a rifle I can shoot than some safe queen

Magpul PMAG and Colt/NHMTG/OKay/Surefeed mags are also universally considered top of the line, of course. Pretty much those and Lancer are the Big 3. They are the only 3 I would be interested in buying at this point, if I were to go shopping
