So I have a 2020 Civic Hatch sport (6-speed MT). I bought it brand new back in March so I only have about 3300 miles on the car. However, there is a shop near me that has a 2017 Type R Engine+transmission with only 2800 miles on it. They're charging $9k for the engine. So I started doing the math;
My car ran me about $23k
A Type R costs about $35k but the stealership would never sell a Type R at MSRP
If I were to buy this engine and put it in my car I'd probably have to make some minor adjustments to the axle and the brakes to accommodate the engine, but on top of all of that it would still come out less than MSRP of a Type R.
Should I make this swap? I would be going from 180 HP to 309HP (JDM engine).

Even better, Since my engine is so new, I can probably just trade the shop my current engine and I would just pay the difference (since the type R engine would cost more than my 1.5L turbo). I'm sure there's probably someone with a Civic LX that wouldn't mind an upgrade to a 1.5L.

That seems like a lot of extra work. Theyre both 10th gen so the bodies are fairly similar
Don't really care about the warranty its already paid off.
Also, the way it stands stock, my car is already a sleeper. Im not beating anyone in a race (unless I hook it up with HonData). And even then I would only be able to safely get an additional 20-25hp making it (at best) on par with a stock SI.Last edited by Maestro; 10-12-2020 at 02:20 AM.

First, you haven't looked into this at all if you think that this will be as simple as 23+9=32. For starters, who is doing the swap for you?
Second, you're going to end up with a POS one-wheel-drive ****box with little Civic brakes and soft Civic suspension. Why on earth would you want to drive that?
Third, if you wanted a fast car, why did you buy a brand new 180hp car? Earlier this year I bought a 2yr old Ford for the same amount but it has way more tech, better traction, and more power/torque than even the Type R. In other words, sell your ****box and get a better car instead of trying to polish a turd.

If you're willing to spend that much money for ~300hp and you're set on keeping that car, a much cheaper option is the 27won w1 drop in turbo, downpipe, and a flex fuel kit. You'd save money even if you built the block. On 91 you'd make about 280whp 280wtq and with 30% ethanol you'd push to maybe 310-320, but not as much as an Si would. If you don't touch the intake and the exhaust past the downpipe you'll have a decent sleeper for a new civic

lol this would be incredibly hard. forget the physical stuff, you need someone to custom program an ECU and to custom program and edit whatever Honda CAN BUS crap is needed.
You need someone or someones to play as a mechanic, a machinist, a welder and an electrician and Honda electronics technician.
You know why you see the same engine swaps over and over again, like another LS miata and think oh look that guys unoriginal, thats because someone has already took out the experiments and guesswork and made a tried and true method, some even sell kits.

No. Torque steer, heavily modding something that just isn't a prime candidate to be heavily modded, etc. Honda also (usually) doesn't overbuild things like their transmissions, diffs, etc. Etc. So take some random base economodel, push 400whp, and things will start breaking. You could upgrade everything, but then you should have just started from a totally different chassis and kept this as a econodaily
Edit: also the type r engine isn't special enough to command that kind of cost. It's a good turbo 4, that's it. There are better turbo 4s, and there are LS's, N54/b58s, etc. All of which are cheaper and comparable or better27
