Goodbye 747s

747s have flown a lot of miles since the launch in 1969, but they are being phased out slowly by airlines (mostly since twin engine planes for so much better and longer range and are cheaper to operate)

The final 2 operated by British Airways are both in the air on their final flights as I type.

I always wanted to fly on one, but never got the chance. They're really spectacular to see in flight.

I guess we'll still have Air Force 1 for a while, and NASA has it's SOPHIA observatory.

Wow, they were so common on long haul flights for so many years, amazed you could have Not flown on one, at least 1 trip. I've not flown much but have been on them e.g. London --> Singapore --> Sydney

Meh.. not flown on one, but I'd bet they're awful. Seats probably face sideways or backwards, the stewardess are so ugly they look like guys (and what's with them wearing cammo? - that look went out of fashion in the 90s FFS), the inflight food and films are said to be lousy. Nope, I'd prefer to fly on a 747.

You probably have, just too old to remember. :P If you flew internationally in the 70s or 80s you usually were on a 747. Unless you were unlucky enough to be on a DC-10.

I did fly on a DC 10 once in 1976, from Atlanta to Spain via Ireland. All my subsequent trips to Spain were either on a charter DC-8 or a submarine from Charleston, S.C.

The DC-8 was way obsolete even back then, and no fun at all.

Never flown on one myself. 767 is the biggest plane I've flown on. I've always wondering what it would be like to go up to a top deck on a plane.
